Top 10 Most Challenged Books of 2024

The American Library Association documented 821 attempts to censor materials and services at libraries, schools, and universities in 2024. The most common reasons for challenges were false claims of illegal obscenity for minors; inclusion of LGBTQIA+ characters or themes; and dealing with topics of race, racism, inclusivity, equity, and social justice. Of the 2,452 unique titles that were challenged or banned in 2024, here are the top 10 most frequently targeted.

 

Fall Makerspace Open Hours

The Makerspace is a creative technology lab on the second floor of Memorial Library. It has a variety of high-tech (3D printers & VR headsets) and traditional crafting supplies/equipment. Staff are always available to guide you through a project. Supplies and materials are free for students completing personal projects. If a club or organization would like to use the Makerspace for a project, contact Karen Dafoe (karen.dafoe@cortland.edu). 

Also new this year is the Stress Less, Make More Mobile Makerspace Cart funded by the SUNY Cortland Auxiliary Services. The cart, located on the first floor of the library, will have a different stress reducing activity weekly. 

Starting on Tuesday 9/2, the Makerspace Open Hours will be as follows:

As the semester ends, this is a friendly reminder to return any library books you’ve checked out. For your convenience, an outside book return bin is located at the main entrance of Memorial Library.

Please return your items by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, May 16 so we can ensure they’re checked in before you leave campus.

Winter Coat Drive

From Monday, April 28th through Friday, May 9th there will be a Winter Coat Drive to help establish a Winter Wardrobe dedicated to students.They are looking for gently worn coats (and gloves & hats) in good condition. 

There will be 3 donation drop-off locations
Student Affairs Office – Corey Union, Room 407                                                                Memorial Library Lobby                                                                                                      Student Life Center Lobby – there will be a tote marked for coat donations on the table across from the front desk
