Plagiomnium ciliare

Plagiomnium ciliare (Müll. Hal.) T. Kop.

Plagiomnium ciliare stems shoot up in a vertical fashion with leaves growing on opposite sides of the stems. Leaf margins are toothed with a predominant costa that extends to the leaf apex where a long tooth resides. Leaves are ovate to elliptical. Leaves are decurrent with teeth all the way to the base. The moss can be found on soil as well as tree bases and prefers a shady habitat.

The teeth along the margins contain multiple cells which is a key characteristic of this species.

Compared to:

Plagiomnium cuspidatum– Teeth generally are from thee middle of the leaves to apex, basal end smooth. Moss is generally smaller.
