Fissidens bryoides, Hedw.
Fissidens bryoides is a small terrestrial fissidens which can most commonly be found on shaded rocks along the gorge, it may also be found on soil. The leaves contain a pocket like structure on one side of the mid-rib. The mid-rib ends at the tip of the leaf. The leaf has elongated cells around the margin which makes a border that ends just below the tip of the leaf. Capsules are exerted above the leaves and contain a pointed lid.
Compared to:
Fissidens fontanus– Aquatic, pleurocarpous moss, can be found submerged in the gorge.
Fissidens taxifolius– Mid-rib extends beyond the leaf tip and has no elongated border cells
