Atrichum altecristatum formerly known as Atrichum undulatum var. altecristatum Renauld & Cardot, Bot. Gaz., is one of the more abundant mosses present at Hoxie Gorge. The WAVY STARBURST MOSS is made distinct by its undulating or wavy leaves. when dry the leaves will crisp up into a cork screw like formation, as seen below.
Atrichum altecristatum is an acrocarpous moss and generally grows in green cushion like mats reaching 3cm in hight. The preferred habit of this moss is moist soil in shade. The capsules are raised above the leaves in a slightly curved fashion. The operculum (lid) of the capsule is long and narrow. Upon reaching maturity the lid opens and exposes the peristome teeth

Atrichum angustatum– is often of smaller height with leaves that are less wide.
