1a. Mid-rib extends beyond the leaf tip with no thickened border around the leaves. Moss is between 4-8mm tall. (figure 2.a).—–Fissidens taxifolius
At Hoxie Gorge Fissidens taxifolius was most commonly found on damp to wet soil and clay.

1b. Mid-rib ends just prior to the leaf tip with a thickened border of elongated cells. Moss is between 2-7mm tall, (figure 2.b).—–Fissidens bryoides
At Hoxie Gorge Fissidens bryoides was most commonly collected along creeks on damp to wet rocks.
