The second notable signature in the autograph book belongs to Ambrose Burnside. Signed without a location or date, it is one of two signatures that was not written originally in the book. Both names were written on a small strip of lined paper, possibly clipped from another document or included as a loose insert.
Burnside was regarded for his early successes in the American Civil War, particularly the capture of Roanoke Island, but he was famously known for his distinct facial hair as well.
With all of the other autographs in the book being signed in the year 1862, Burnside’s autograph most likely was signed around this time as well, some further evidence comes from Burnside’s signature itself. His signature includes a note of him serving in the Potomac, which he took command of in the year 1862.
