Exploring an 1800s Autograph Book
SUNY Cortland
This artifact is an autograph book filled with signatures and brief notes from numerous lesser-known figures who played small but fascinating roles in history. Each page offers a glimpse into forgotten stories—regional politicians, early educators, and community leaders whose contributions rarely make headlines but shaped local culture in meaningful ways. The book’s worn leather cover and delicate pages speak to its age and the care taken to preserve it. Today, this unique piece of historical ephemera is housed in the Brooks Museum at SUNY Cortland, where it serves as a quiet testament to the everyday individuals who left their mark on the past.
