The Learning Center (TLC) exists for one purpose… to help students be successful in their classes. TLC offers a variety of resources, including course-specific Professional and Peer tutoring, more general help with learning math, writing (including pre-writing and citations), note-taking, and test-taking, as well as tutoring and resources for improving general study, organization, and time management. You can also take advantage of Supplemental Instruction (SI) and Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) in several historically difficult classes. Drop-in tutoring is available through Nightowl, Cortland’s nighttime online tutoring service. If you are struggling, or if you just want to get the most out of your time here at SUNY Cortland, check out TLC’s link for more information about services offered, hours of operation, or scheduling appointments: www2.cortland.edu/tlc. You can also visit them Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. in Van Hoesen Hall, Room B-205, or call them at 607-753-4309.

Peer-Led Team Learning
Peer-Led Team Learning is an online semester-long problem-solving workshop. The goal of this is to increase student success in undergraduate General Chemistry I and II courses. During weekly 90-minute online workshops in Microsoft Teams, students work together to learn how to solve difficult problems through practice.
Supplemental Instruction (SI)
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a series of free review sessions for students taking historically difficult classes. While attendance is voluntary, students who attend SI regularly and come prepared to work tend to gain an increased understanding of course material and earn higher grades.
Disability Resources Office
If you know or suspect that you may have a specific learning problem that affects your academic success, you may want to contact the Disability Resource Office. The staff offers a range of services, and communications with them are confidential.
Other resources available…
- Visit your instructor during office hours… The best strategy is to walk in with a list of specific questions. Go over your graded tests and assignments to see if there is a pattern that can be addressed. Ask for advice!
- Talk to your faculty advisor… They probably will not be able to tutor you in problem classes, but they may have ideas that might help you to be more successful.
- If you are an athlete, your coach may be able to steer you toward additional resources that are available to you.
- Talk to your teaching assistants. They were selected because they are students who have overcome their own challenges.
- If you know students who are successful, find out what they do.
- Check out The Learning Center’s website!
