In the Fall of 1972, the senior graduating class of 1973 returned to campus having just witnessed the phenomenon that was Mark Spitz, winning an unbelievable 7 gold medals in swimming each in record-time at the Munich Olympics. That national \u201chigh\u201d was quickly overshadowed by the first terrorist attack to be broadcast to a global audience when the Palestinian militant group \u201cBlack September\u201d kidnapped and then killed 9 members of the Israeli Olympic team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By mid-September of 1972, G. Gordon Liddy, F. Howard Hunt and the Watergate burglars were indicted for the June 17th break in of the Democratic National Committee while presidential incumbent, Richard Nixon was moving towards one of the biggest landslides in re-election history just two months later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As 1973 arrived, Cortland students returned from Christmas break to a dizzying amount of news headlines at home and around the world. In fact, there were 4 major events that happened over only 7 days. On January 20th, Nixon was inaugurated for his second term, just 2 days later, his predecessor, Lyndon Johnson died, that same day on January 22nd, Roe v. Wade was affirmed by the Supreme Court and on January 27th, the Paris Peace Accords was signed officially ending the US involvement in the Vietnam War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the time Cortland graduates received their diplomas on May 27th, 1973, the best picture Oscar went to The Godfather, the very first handheld cell phone call was made, New York\u2019s World Trade Center opened, and the televised proceedings of the Watergate trial were underway from the United States Senate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
