The Charlie Daniels Band

Using the Allman Brothers Band’s southern rock style as a template, the Charlie Daniels Band fused hardcore country with hard edged Southern rock, boogie and blues.  One of the best fiddle players around, Charlie Daniels first arrived in Nashville as an in-demand session player who was also skilled at guitar, banjo and mandolin.  The Charlie Daniels Band were country but not traditional enough for Nashville, so they perfected their signature sound as “good ‘ole country boys” with a rock edge.  At the time of their show at Cortland’s Ice Arena, “The Devil Went Down To Georgia” has not yet been recorded.

  • “South’s Gonna Do It Again”

SAB CCC at PER Ice Arena, The Winters Brothers opens

The Charlie Daniels Band delivered a massive, high-energy performance at SUNY Cortland on September 30, 1977. [1, 2]
The Performance Details
  • The Venue: Unlike the J. Geils Band shows at Lusk Field House, this concert took place at the PER Ice Arena (Physical Education and Recreation Center).
  • The Lineup: They shared the ticket with the Winter Brothers Band, making it an ultimate night of pure Southern rock and country-boogie.
  • The Local Connection: The show was arranged through regional promoter Ralph Pollock and the student-run Student Activities Board (SAB). Local upstate musicians who opened or attended frequently recall it as a major highlight of the region’s 1970s concert boom.
