With competition season coming to a start here within the dance community at SUNY Cortland, it is time to start shifting our focus towards them and the hard work they put into their choreography which tends to get overlooked. Specifically, we are looking at the weekend dance competition, also known as an invitational, Cortland Dance Company is partaking in and will most definitely steal the stage with their stellar stage presence, technique, and choreography at Cortland Junior Senior High School! Unfortunately, Cortland\u2019s Kick Line dance team canceled at the last from partaking in \u00a0the competition due to the harsh weather conditions such as extreme winds that have been engulfing the air since last night. Oh No! What are we going to do without our kick line team competing alongside Dance Company for our weekend competition!? Although kick line will not be helping Dance Company to take Cortland to the finish line and win the prize, however, Dance Company will still take everyone to the finish and end the competition with a bang!<\/span> <\/p> \u00a0<\/p> Our stellar Dance Company president Leanna Jackson, vice president Jacquelyn Cervini, secretary Emily Bruno, treasurer Jessie Kam, and social media\/pr manager Kaitlin Davis have put in a significant amount of hard work into their choreography and the competition overall, making sure their dancers are as amazing as possible and ready for their competition! They will be fighting to the finish and going head-to-head against Mount Saint Mary College and SUNY Oneonta and seeing who the real dancing queen of the competition is and who will end up taking the crown. The real question is, what dance styles will Cortland Dance Company be showcasing at this weekend\u2019s competition? They will be showcasing hip hop, jazz and contemporary routines for our judges while also performing individual solos and duets for our judges, showcasing their talent, technique and hard work they have been putting into learning these dances our choreographers have created with their great sense of artistry and creativity over the course of this and last semester.\u00a0<\/p> \u00a0<\/p> As the competitive team warms up prior to the competition starting, they are showcasing a complicated lift for a group contemporary routine, showcasing their strength and agility they must maintain and that energy remaining consistent throughout the contemporary routine and foreword as the competition progresses. A couple of our dancers during the practice showcased their ability to hit multiple fouett\u00e9s during each revolution for a contemporary routine and the ability to hit calypsos at full agility, speed, and strength without struggle while also maintaining beautiful lines with every landing. Our trio also showcased their ability to hit fan kicks, axel jumps, floor work, an aerial with full agility and landing on the beat, hitting complicated lifts, and maintaining facial expressions to show their abilities to own the stage with confidence, using that confidence to impress the judges.\u00a0<\/p> \u00a0<\/p> Now, Mount Saint Mary College\u2019s dance team is showcasing their group hip hop routine, although they are just marking their routine, they are showing great sass and confidence throughout their routine, which are one of the main fundamentals to a good hip hop routine. They also showcased their group contemporary routine, also showing their ability to hit fouett\u00e9 turns and other complicated turns and leaps that are a part of the fundamentals to a great contemporary routine. One of their soloists performed a contemporary routine, hitting a calypso into an illusion turn, while also maintaining beautiful lines within jumps and leaps throughout the solo.\u00a0<\/p> \u00a0<\/p> First, Cortland Dance Company kicks off the dance competition with a high energy and sassy hip hop routine, choreographed to the song \u201cbling bling\u201d, as they brighten the stage with their hot pink and bling ensembles, which go with the theme of the song. Next, SUNY Oneonta\u2019s dance team then goes onto perform a contemporary routine to the song , , by which is full of emotion, floor work, turns, facials, and leaps that allow for the viewers to feel the music with them. MSMC soloist performs a contemporary routine called, \u201ccreep\u201d, which is consistently filled with content such as floor work, arabesques, calypsos, fouett\u00e9s, leaps, attitude turns, emotional facials and other acrobatics to showcase such emotion. Now Cortland Dance Company performs a jazz routine to a song called, \u201cthe way\u201d, by Michael Jackson which is full, all-out attitude and sass with movements and jumps across the floors, consistency with the sassy facials which is also highlighted by their bling costumes. Cortland Dance Company takes on the stage with one of their soloists performing a contemporary routine called \u201cbetween villages\u201d, which is full of content such as floor work, airy jumps and other turns that make this performance both emotional and sentimental for anyone who is watching, so they get to feel the emotions with the soloist and allowing for the dancer to tell the story with her moves. Oneonta state dance team is now back on stage performing a trio contemporary routine called,\u201d roam\u201d, which started off very strong with the high calypso into a roll across the floor and other strong tricks, lifts, and turns.\u00a0<\/p> \u00a0<\/p> Cortland Dance Company is back on stage with a jazz routine called, \u201cBlack and Gold\u201d, which is full of across the floor choreography turns and floorwork and full of lifts and tricks, the sass engulfs the stage as a couple of the dancers fill the stage with fan kicks, calypsos and even an aerial while also maintaining that fluidity within all the movements and they end the dance with the side sassy jazz walk. MSMC now enters the stage performing a pom routine, with moves like NFL cheerleaders while also showcasing hip hop like moves, but will they try to take Dance Company\u2019s crown?! This competition is going to be great for the fight for the crown knowing everyone wants a piece of it! Oneonta is now back up with a contemporary duet, but will Dance Company have to fight even harder to win the crown and keep the title of the dancing queens of the competition? That we will have to figure out once we make it to the end of the competition!<\/p> \u00a0<\/p> During the awards ceremony, Kaitlin Davis receives the mucho fuego award for her high energy performance and always having on point facial expressions. Leanna Jackson receives the pray award due to the high emotion she displayed within her routine. Teenage dream for Cortland receives third place for the solo category. Video games for Cortland Dance Company receives second place for the solo category within the competition. Pray got third place for the lyrical and contemporary category due to the story telling and the beautifully executed emotional performance. United in grief got second place for Cortland dance company also for lyrical and contemporary. World star receives second place for the hip hop category. Que calor receives first place for hip hop due to the high intensity, high packed choreography and full of content and the overall swag it displayed consistently throughout the routine. For the open category sweet dreams got first place for Cortland dance company.\u00a0\u00a0For the jazz category, Cortland Dance Company received second place for their group routine, black and gold. The way received first place Cortland dance company for jazz.
