{"id":8430,"date":"2025-05-13T14:21:38","date_gmt":"2025-05-13T18:21:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.cortland.edu\/dragon-chronicle\/?p=8430"},"modified":"2025-05-13T14:29:37","modified_gmt":"2025-05-13T18:29:37","slug":"tackling-community-service-cortland-womens-rugby-gives-back-through-the-big-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.cortland.edu\/dragon-chronicle\/2025\/05\/13\/tackling-community-service-cortland-womens-rugby-gives-back-through-the-big-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Tackling Community Service: Cortland Women\u2019s Rugby Gives Back Through the Big Event\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This year&#8217;s Big Event saw hundreds of SUNY Cortland students who volunteered their time and services as part of a campus-wide effort to give back to the Cortland community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Peace Frogs were one of many sports clubs, varsity athletics, Greek life, and campus organizations who participated across 44 job sites, according to the SGA event coordinator, Eve Cisneros.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In partnership with the SUNY Cortland Town and Gown Ad Hoc Planning Committee\u2014 a group of university employees and local residents who seek to facilitate communication between the college and the community\u2014Cisneros and the SGA cabinet coordinated The Big Event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re guests to the residents in the town of Cortland, so we need to be respectful,\u201d said freshman member of the women\u2019s rugby team, Elisabeth Lentini. \u201cI know people in the community help clean up SUNY Cortland\u2019s campus so why can&#8217;t we help the whole town?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cisneros said it\u2019s important to host the event because it allows SUNY Cortland and the Cortland community to grow a strong sense of togetherness and community.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After watching her neighbors receive help from Cortland students, Liz Starr was curious to see what she had been missing. The Peace Frogs helped Starr mulch her yard, rake leaves, and move outdoor furniture.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe rugby team is absolutely amazing,\u201d said Starr. \u201cThey are selfless, they are hard workers, and it\u2019s pretty amazing they\u2019re giving up their Sunday morning to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year marks Starr\u2019s second time participating in The Big Event, and she looks forward to continuing to receive support in the future.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have already received many emails from the community expressing gratitude for the students&#8217; work,\u201d said Cisneros.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Junior rugby team captain Erin Anderson spent the morning pulling weeds and clearing old leaves on the edge of Starr\u2019s property with her teammates.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think every sport team should do this,\u201d said Anderson. \u201cWe\u2019re working together on one single project, so it\u2019s kind of like a team building exercise in a way.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.cortland.edu\/dragon-chronicle\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2025\/05\/IMG_0985-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8460\" style=\"width:293px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.cortland.edu\/dragon-chronicle\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2025\/05\/IMG_0985-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/sites.cortland.edu\/dragon-chronicle\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2025\/05\/IMG_0985-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/sites.cortland.edu\/dragon-chronicle\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2025\/05\/IMG_0985-1152x1536.jpeg 1152w, https:\/\/sites.cortland.edu\/dragon-chronicle\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2025\/05\/IMG_0985-1536x2048.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/sites.cortland.edu\/dragon-chronicle\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2025\/05\/IMG_0985-scaled.jpeg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Megan Sparks, member of the Peace Frogs, building a sidewalk at a residence in Cortland.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The team has participated in the Big Event for several years and they look forward to it each year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Women\u2019s Rugby team has always been such a great help,\u201d said Cisneros. \u201cTheir dedication and hard work make them a group that can always be relied upon to show up.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said there have been many instances of job sites that have grown fond of groups that have previously done work at their location and reward them as a thank-you.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rugby team gladly accepted food, water, and Gatorade from the residents.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the day is over, The Big Event continues to grow in recognition and impact. Cisneros said she likes to scroll through the social media posts that the involved groups make for The Big Event.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo see the pictures and read their captions of gratitude and happiness post-event always makes me smile and shows the importance of this event for everyone,\u201d said Cisneros.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check updates from the Student Government Association on how to get involved.
