If this is the case you’re not alone. Picking a movie can be hard, especially when you have too many choices. That’s where Letterboxd comes in, and if you’re someone who watches movies even once in a while, it’s definitely worth downloading.

What Is Letterboxd?

Letterboxd is essentially social media for movie lovers. It allows you to rate movies, write short reviews, create lists of what you want to watch, and track everything you’ve already seen. But it’s more than just a place to keep a log. It lets you share your thoughts and opinions in a way that feels meaningful. While many streaming platforms only offer a thumbs-up or thumbs-down option, Letterboxd encourages more detailed reflection. You’re able to express your feelings about a film in your own words, whether you loved it, hated it, or on the fence about it.

You’ll Never Forget What You Watched

We’ve all had that frustrating moment where we rewatch a movie halfway through only to realize we’ve seen it before. This is something I’ve experienced many times. With Letterboxd, that won’t happen. Each film you watch is logged in your personal diary, making it easy to track what you’ve seen, when you watched it, and what you thought of it (as long as you remember to rate it). This becomes especially helpful if you’re a movie buff who’s constantly exploring new genres or revisiting old favorites. Not only does it prevent accidental rewatching, but it also creates a record of your cinematic journey.

It Helps You Pick What to Watch Next

Trying to pick your next movie can be frustrating, especially when there’s so much to choose from. Letterboxd offers a solution. You can revisit your watchlist, check trending movies, see what your friends are watching, or explore themed lists made by other users. Instead of endless scrolling, you can quickly discover something that is in your interest.

You’ll Start Watching Movies Just to Rate Them

From my personal experience, once you start logging movies on Letterboxd, you might find yourself watching more films for the sole purpose of rating and reviewing them. The process of logging a movie the moment it ends, assigning it a rating, and maybe even crafting a short review becomes almost addictive. You’ll feel a sense of accomplishment in adding a new film to your list and reflecting on it, which keeps the process fresh and exciting. In many ways, it becomes a game.

You Don’t Have to Be a Film Expert

Letterboxd is for everyone, you don’t need to write long reviews or know every director’s name to participate. In fact, some of the best reviews are the simplest ones. Whether it’s a one-liner such as “That was wild” or a more thoughtful reflection. The platform thrives on personal opinions, not on expertise. It’s a space for casual watchers, hardcore fans, and anyone in between. Letterboxd offers a platform where your voice matters, regardless of your level of film knowledge.

You Might Even Discover a New Favorite Movie

Letterboxd gives you the ability to discover hidden gems. As you follow friends, critics, and other users, you gain access to recommendations and films that you may never have come across otherwise. Some of these films could quickly become favorites, while others might offer a refreshing change from your usual viewing habits.

Conclusion

Using Letterboxd transforms the way you watch and interact with movies. It’s not just a way to track what you’ve seen, but a tool for making more thoughtful, intentional choices about what to watch next. Once you start using it, you might be surprised by how many movies you end up watching. For instance I’ve logged 123 movies since I downloaded Letterboxd last year. If you’re tired of the endless scrolling or want a way to track your movie journey, give Letterboxd a try. You might discover a new favorite film along the way.

Have you’ve ever spent way too long scrolling through Netflix, Hulu, Max, etc trying to decide what to watch?
