With midterms and assignment deadlines all coming up at once, our energy and motivation tend to dwindle. It gets much harder to get through the day because of how exhausted and burnt-out students get. Not only that, but the weather is changing, leading to sickness spreading throughout campus. I find there to be fewer people in my classes, and those who are there are less engaged. If you need some advice on how to overcome the mid-semester slump, here are some tips:

1. Reset Your Approach

Now that we’re halfway through the semester, our days start to get repetitive and tiresome. In order to rebuild your energy to make it through each day, you need to develop a new strategy. Whether it’s trying new work cycles or changing your study spot, just try to move away from your normal routine to keep yourself from living in a loop. For instance, you can move out of your usual desk in your room and try to go to the library, a quiet spot in one of the academic buildings, or even a local coffee shop to get your work done. As for studying approaches, take short breaks in between tasks rather than trying to overwhelm yourself with all of your work at once.

2. Get Help from Others

It can be easy to isolate yourself while academic stress accumulates in the middle of the semester. Procrastination increases, which leads to more stress and less time to complete your work. However, nobody is going through the mid-semester slump alone, so we could all lean on each other to get by. You can study with a friend or group to hold yourselves accountable or even go to The Learning Center for professional and peer tutoring/academic support. Another form of help can be from your professors; whether it’s by sending an email or visiting office hours, they are often willing to offer extensions or answer questions regarding your work. If you’re in need of more emotional assistance rather than solely academic, you can also try to go to Counselling Services to talk you through any issues that are hindering your success.

3. Take Care of Your Well-Being

While you’re overworking yourself to meet deadlines before we start the second half of the semester, your physical and mental health can be negatively affected. Don’t forget how important it is to prioritize yourself during these few insanely busy weeks. Although you may think it to be beneficial to pull an all-nighter to cram for an upcoming exam, it ultimately backfires by exhausting your brain and making it harder to focus. Try to get 7 to 9 hours of sleep, especially before a midterm, to ensure your mind is well-rested and able to process information without struggle. Before long study sessions, and even during, you should also make sure to eat to keep your body fueled to get through it. While caffeine may seem necessary to keep yourself energized for the hours of work you need to do, you should still keep a water bottle nearby to stay hydrated and motivated. Along with taking care of your physical health, your mental health should also be a priority. Try to step outside for a moment to get some air and sunlight when you’re stuck inside all day at your desk working.

4. Practice Time Management

The semester goes by quickly, so time can easily slip away from you. Remember to look at each class syllabus to review when assignments are due and exam dates. If you know you’re going to be busy one week and not have time to finish work, adjust your schedule to find time beforehand to complete it on time. Some people may study better in the morning, while some find it easier to study at night. So, figure out which times and days you prefer to work in order to perform at your best. Think back on your past assignments and tests for each class and which ones you struggled the most with. If you find one class you’re doing better in than others, plan to commit more time to that subject. It’s helpful to realize that even though the days feel as if they’re going by in the blink of an eye, there is actually more time than you may think. Just keep track and don’t feel overwhelmed with too much to do in so little time.

5. Take Time to Relax

When you’re overworked, you’re more likely to get burnt out and exhausted. Don’t forget to take time for yourself and do something that relaxes you. Whether it’s watching your comfort movie, hanging out with friends, or trying a new hobby, try to set aside even an hour to do a calming activity. Getting your work done is important, but so is self-care. Taking care of yourself can also aid academic success by refreshing your mind and body, making your studying time more effective. This short period that you spend relaxing acts as a refresh to reset your mindset and renew your energy and motivation to take on your workload.

Remember why you started the semester in the first place and know that this mid-semester slump will eventually end. Even though it may feel like it’s taking over your life at the moment, just change your perspective and think about how rewarding it’ll feel once it’s over. Reach out to your support system when you’re struggling and reflect on your goals for the end of the semester. A new outlook and the tips I’ve shared can help you overcome the mid-semester slump and set you up for a successful rest of the year.

As November is just beginning, we’re entering the middle of the semester.
