Here at SUNY Cortland, I am a member of Greek life, specifically Delta Phi Epsilon. About 2 weekends ago, it marked the conclusion of our annual philanthropy 65 roses, and I would love to spread the word about it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Delta Phi Epsilon, is an international sorority that was founded in 1917. A sorority that is not solely about fostering a community or a sisterhood but also encircling support to charitable causes, organizing service events and fundraisers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Specifically to DPhiE, we officially adopted the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) as a philanthropy in 1957 due to a deeply personal plea from sister Phyllis Kossoff, whose daughter suffered from the disease. This philanthropy also known as 65 Roses is deeply rooted in compassion, raising awareness, and hope, with the ultimate goal of supporting those affected by Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and helping to eventually find a cure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a chronic and genetic disease that causes the body to produce a sticky thick mucus that severely affects the lungs, pancreas, and other organs. Which then later leads to constant respiratory infections, difficulty breathing, and other digestive issues due to blocked enzyme ducts. The name \u201c65 Roses\u201d originated in 1965 from a young child who mispronounced “cystic fibrosis” while hearing his mother, making phone calls to raise funds for the disease. The phrase stuck since and has since become a symbol of the CF community\u2019s fight for awareness and the hope to find a cure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Every year, here at SUNY Cortland, DPhiE hosts a 65 Roses event. Which is held at Greek Peak where all sorority members, their families and friends are more than welcome to attend. This is organized by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and our sororities programming chair to raise money for research. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This event not only serves to fundraise for CF but also to educate people, raise awareness and show their support for the individuals and families that may be affected by the disease. Over the years we have developed close connections with numerous local CF families. This personal bond especially fuels our passion for the cause. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Every year we have speakers come in and talk about their personal experiences with CF and how much this philanthropy helps them. Along with the heartfelt speeches and nice dinners, we also have additional raffle baskets with different themes to add to our fundraiser and this year we have raised over $30,000!!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Just a few decades ago, children with CF rarely lived into their adult years. Now, many people with CF live into their 60s and beyond, thanks to the funding that goes into research and ultimately better treatments. Our only hope and prayer is that over time and with progression, eventually we find a cure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Delta Phi Epsilon\u2019s 65 Roses philanthropy and campaign is a communitywide heartfelt mission. This event teaches so many life long values, including empathy, leadership, and mainly the importance of standing by and supporting those who face lifelong health challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
