The Culture Behind the Cup

Bari Gelfand · September 29, 2026

Around 12.2% of the world’s population drinks coffee. That’s more than 1 billion people drinking it every day. Coffee has become more than just a drink people have in the morning to wake up. For many people, especially college students, getting coffee has become part of their daily routine, social life, and even their personality. Whether it’s grabbing an iced coffee before class, studying at a coffee shop, or meeting up with a friend, coffee seems to be everywhere. So, how and why did coffee become so popular?

People love coffee mainly for the effect and taste. Especially now, there are endless amounts of flavors and combinations you can add to your coffee. Cold foams, spices, and especially now fall season pumpkin flavors. The results from a Google Form about favorite coffee spots: the overall winner was 7 Brew. 7 Brew is a double-lane drive-through drink establishment that has become extremely popular within the past 2 years. The drivethrough coffeehouse has grown from 38 stands in January 2023 to over 700+ across 38 states. It serves over 20,000+ flavorful drinks across 7 categories, including coffees, 7 energy drinks, 7 fizz sodas, teas, lemonades, smoothies, and shakes.

Coffee dates have become a fast favorite for so many people. It is an easy and quick way to connect with others. A lot of people also enjoy getting coffee and sitting in the car to talk. It’s private, easy, and enjoyable. People also like to sit in their cars to film a short Instagream reel or TikTok of the order process while encouraging those to try it as well. Another popular favorite is bringing schoolwork to coffee shops. Grab a drink and your computer; people can get work done in a social setting while enjoying their drink.

Cute cups, coffee shops, studying with a drink, morning routines, etc., make coffee look like part of an aesthetic lifestyle. A former SUNY Cortland student, Noelle Fox, has a TikTok profile that includes many videos about different coffee spots and drinks. Not only are videos like this entertaining to watch, but they are also helpful when you do not know what to get or where to go. Even just searching on any social media platform for “best coffee spots in Cortland,” you get loads of information on where to go and what to get. You can even discover new drink combinations and flavors to try on your next coffee run. A lot of people also do “taste tests,” so in these videos you can watch people’s live reactions to the drink. They explain the taste and how much they like it.

Coffee has become much more than a drink people have to wake themselves up. It has become part of people’s routines, social lives, and even their online lives. Whether it’s grabbing a coffee before class, meeting a friend at a café, or trying a new drink because it went viral, coffee has found a place in everyday life. With so many options and new trends constantly appearing, it doesn’t seem like coffee’s popularity is slowing down anytime soon.
