Fashion is always changing! However, it kind of feels like nothing ever goes out of style for good. From platform flip-flops to platform UGG slides and low-rise jeans to ultra-low-rise, trends from the past seem to find their way back into societal norms and popularity. People often believe new trends are always authentic or original, but I think trends are really inspired by previous generations. In my opinion, trends return every few years because of nostalgia, the media, and the desire for a rebranding of an old trend for fashion attention.
A large reason trends make a comeback has to be nostalgia. People tend to reflect on particular eras with familiar or positive feelings, mainly when associated with memories or better times that they miss or yearn for. An example of this would be that a lot of trends from the 1990s and early 2000s have grown in popularity very recently. This even includes the generation of kids who were too young to experience those decades themselves. I personally think that the generations who grew up and experienced this era would love seeing their once-worn styles return to pop culture. My sisters were growing up in the early 2000s, and they have expressed that it brings a sense of comfort from a time they miss. It is also cool that now, as their younger sister, I get to experience these trends for the first time, just like they did at my age. Nostalgia lets people reconnect with the past while giving old trends a fresh meaning.
Social media plays the main role in bringing trends back and designing them to be better than ever. I believe the collectiveness of different ideas or personal takes from people all around the world on social media makes these trends so modernized and special for the current time. Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, or Pinterest make it quick and easy for people to find styles, music, and aesthetics from past decades. Literally, one viral video or picture can make an old trend become popular again; especially when an influencer posts about it, it can blow up overnight. Trends like baggy jeans, claw clips, or vintage tees have grown in popularity through social media. Influencers will introduce these styles to younger audiences if they think they should be back in style, making them seem fresh and exciting again.
When people get to express their individuality, I think it’s healthy. That’s why I believe returning trends are so important for people to feel like they have somewhere to express themselves. Even if the trend is old, they can show their creativity by bringing the trends back in their own way. Bringing back older trends lets people experiment with styles from other decades while showing personality in the fashion. As an example, someone might wear vintage fashion with modern accessories to make a cool or unique outfit. Even though trends may repeat, people rarely wear them the same way as they were originally worn. New generations change these styles to fit their own preferences, which helps old trends feel refreshed.
All in all, I believe that trends return every few decades because society is always going to be gravitating towards nostalgia. Social media makes old styles accessible to rebrand, and each generation seeks new ways to express itself. Fashion may seem like it is always advancing, but this is also heavily influenced by the past. I think the comeback of older trends is interesting because it shows how much our interests and styles as a society can connect across all generations. I think the new fashion lies in the revamping of old trends, which is really special. Instead of seeing repeated trends as a lack of originality, we should see them as an opportunity to reinvent old fashion and make it our own.
