New York Summer To-Do List

Tyler Wavercak · May 4, 2026

New York State offers a wide range of outdoor adventures and cultural attractions, making it a destination that appeals to both thrill-seekers and those seeking a more relaxed experience.

For nature lovers, the state is home to some of the most well-known waterfalls in the country. Niagara Falls remains the most iconic, featuring three separate waterfalls: Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls. Visitors can experience the falls up close on the Cave of the Winds tour.

In the Finger Lakes region, Watkins Glen State Park draws visitors with its scenic gorge trail, where 19 waterfalls can be viewed along a relatively short hike. Nearby, Robert H. Treman State Park offers a mix of waterfalls and natural swimming areas, while Taughannock Falls State Park features a 215-foot waterfall—one of the tallest in the eastern United States.

Further east, Kaaterskill Falls in the Catskills remains a popular hiking destination known for its dramatic views. In the Adirondacks, Ausable Chasm provides a more rugged experience with opportunities for rafting and hiking. For quieter scenery, parks such as Letchworth State Park and Zoar Valley offer expansive trails and less crowded viewpoints.

Adventure tourism continues to grow across the state, with ropes courses and zipline parks attracting families and groups. At Holiday Valley Ski Resort, the Sky High Aerial Adventure Park features 13 courses ranging from beginner to double-black-diamond difficulty, each incorporating ziplines and elevated obstacles.

Indoor adventure options are also expanding. Inside Destiny USA, WonderWorks Syracuse offers the “Canyon Climb Adventure,” a three-story suspended ropes course with 81 obstacles, as well as a smaller course designed for children. The location also provides access to shopping, dining, and other entertainment options.

In western New York, Peek’n Peak Resort has developed a range of outdoor activities through its Mountain Adventures program. The resort’s aerial course includes 69 obstacles, along with multiple zipline experiences such as the 2,000-foot Giant Dual Ziplines and the Soaring Eagle Zipline. Chairlift rides are also available for visitors seeking a more relaxed experience.

Beyond outdoor recreation, New York’s museum offerings continue to draw national and international attention. In New York City, major institutions such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Museum of Modern Art, and Metropolitan Museum of Art house some of the world’s most significant art collections.

Elsewhere in the state, museums provide more specialized experiences. The Corning Museum of Glass highlights the history and innovation of glassmaking, while the Fenimore Art Museum focuses on American folk and Native American art. Contemporary art is featured at Dia:Beacon, housed in a repurposed industrial space.

Interactive and outdoor experiences are also popular. The The Strong National Museum of Play offers hands-on exhibits for visitors of all ages, while Storm King Art Center and Griffis Sculpture Park combine art with natural landscapes.

Cultural and historical sites further round out the state’s offerings. Bethel Woods Center for the Arts preserves the legacy of the 1969 Woodstock festival, while the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum celebrates the history of America’s pastime. In Jamestown, the National Comedy Center highlights the evolution of comedy through interactive exhibits.

From natural landmarks to interactive attractions and world-class museums, New York State continues to offer a diverse range of experiences for visitors throughout the year.
