CORTLAND, N.Y. (AP) — The SUNY Cortland men’s lacrosse team delivered a historic and dominant performance Wednesday afternoon, overwhelming SUNY Plattsburgh 36-3 in the SUNYAC semifinals and setting a new program record for goals in a single game.
The top-seeded Red Dragons left little doubt from the opening whistle, using relentless offensive pressure and near-total control of possession to dismantle the Cardinals at Grady Field. The 36 goals surpassed the program’s previous single-game scoring mark and highlighted one of the most lopsided victories in conference postseason history.
Cortland’s attack was balanced and explosive, with multiple players contributing to the scoring outburst. Nick Stoecker led the way with a standout performance, recording six goals as part of a nine-point effort. Drew Williamee added five goals and seven points, helping fuel a relentless offensive pace that Plattsburgh could not contain.
Possession played a crucial role in the Red Dragons’ dominance. Cortland controlled faceoffs throughout the game, winning 37 of 43 for an .860 success rate. Nicky Miltenberger was perfect at the faceoff X, going 15-for-15 while also contributing two goals and an assist, along with 11 ground balls. Teammate Chad Bowen added another strong showing, winning 15 of 16 faceoffs.
The Red Dragons wasted no time establishing control, jumping out to a commanding early lead and continuing to build momentum in each quarter. Their offensive efficiency was paired with a suffocating defense that limited Plattsburgh’s opportunities and forced turnovers. By halftime, the outcome was all but decided, with Cortland continuing to push the pace rather than easing off the attack.
Plattsburgh struggled to find any rhythm against Cortland’s pressure. Jamie Gipe, Peter Urso, and Steven Fenner each scored a goal for the Cardinals, accounting for the team’s three total goals. Despite defensive efforts that included caused turnovers and ground balls, Plattsburgh was unable to slow down the Red Dragons’ fast-paced offense.
The victory continues a dominant stretch for Cortland, a program with a long tradition of success in NCAA Division III lacrosse, including multiple national championships and numerous conference titles. Their performance in the semifinal not only reinforces their status as a conference powerhouse but also positions them as a strong contender heading into the SUNYAC championship game.
Beyond the record-setting scoring total, the game showcased Cortland’s depth and efficiency. The team’s ability to control possession, execute offensively, and maintain defensive discipline created a complete performance that will be difficult for opponents to match.
With the win, Cortland advances to the SUNYAC final, carrying momentum and confidence after one of the most dominant outings in program history. If the Red Dragons continue to play at this level, they will be a formidable force as they pursue another conference title and a potential deep run in the NCAA Division III tournament.
For Plattsburgh, the loss marks a difficult end to an otherwise competitive season. The Cardinals will look to regroup and build on their campaign moving forward.
Cortland’s record-breaking performance will be remembered not only for the final score but for the efficiency, balance, and intensity displayed across all facets of the game — a statement victory at the most critical point of the season.
