CORTLAND, N.Y. (AP) — The Cortland Red Dragons men’s outdoor track and field team delivered a statement performance over the weekend, recording 13 All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Conference (AARTFC) qualifying marks while competing at a pair of Division I meets.
Cortland split competition between the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, and the Cornell Big Red Invitational in Ithaca, New York. Despite facing deeper, Division I-heavy fields, the Red Dragons demonstrated both depth and high-end talent, highlighted by multiple top finishes and nationally ranked performances.
Leading the way was Kyler Alston, who captured first place in the 400-meter hurdles at Bucknell with a time of 52.40 seconds. His winning effort currently ranks third in NCAA Division III this season, placing him among the top contenders nationally. Alston’s performance stood out as one of the strongest of the weekend and underscored Cortland’s ability to excel against top-tier competition.
The Red Dragons also showed strength in the sprint events. Marcello Mastrocco turned in a top-10 finish in the 100-meter dash, placing ninth out of 68 competitors with a time of 10.77 seconds. Close behind was LeBron Richardson, who finished 11th in 10.84 seconds, further solidifying Cortland’s presence in a highly competitive field.
Richardson added to his productive weekend in the long jump, where he placed 10th with a leap of 6.79 meters (22 feet, 3.5 inches). His versatility across events contributed to Cortland’s overall success and added another AARTFC qualifying performance to the team’s total.
Declan Kennedy also made an impact in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 55.98 seconds. His effort added depth to Cortland’s hurdles group and contributed to the growing list of regional qualifiers.
Across both meets, Cortland athletes consistently met or surpassed AARTFC qualifying standards, a key benchmark for postseason eligibility. The 13 qualifying marks achieved over the weekend reflect not only individual success but also the program’s overall development and competitiveness early in the outdoor season.
The Cornell meet provided an additional platform for the Red Dragons to build on their momentum. While specific top finishes varied by event, the team continued to produce qualifying-level performances, demonstrating consistency across different venues and levels of competition. Competing in multiple meets simultaneously allowed Cortland to maximize opportunities for athletes to perform and contribute.
Facing Division I programs presents a unique challenge for Division III teams, but it also offers valuable experience. For Cortland, the weekend served as both a test and a proving ground. Athletes were able to push their limits against stronger competition, often resulting in improved times and marks.
The strong showing positions Cortland well for the outdoor season. With several athletes already ranking among the top in Division III and a growing list of AARTFC qualifiers, the Red Dragons have built early momentum that could carry into championship-level competition.
As the season progresses, the team will look to refine performances, improve consistency, and continue adding to its list of qualifiers. If this weekend’s results are any indication, Cortland has the depth, talent, and competitive edge to remain a force within Division III track and field.
With a solid foundation now in place, the Red Dragons will aim to build on their success in upcoming meets as they prepare for the postseason stretch.
