Cortland Men’s Track and Field Records National Top-20 Performances

Josh Michel · April 6, 2026

CORTLAND, N.Y. (April 6, 2026) — The SUNY Cortland Athletics men’s track and field team recorded several impressive performances over the weekend, producing multiple marks that rank among the top 20 in NCAA Division III competition. Competing at a pair of meets, including the Cortland Red Dragon Open, the Red Dragons demonstrated strong depth across sprint, distance, hurdle, and field events.

One of the highlights came in the 800 meters, where Jack Bisbee finished second with a time of 1 minute, 55.54 seconds. Teammates Carter Naginey and Jordan Wingert also delivered strong results in the event, finishing third and eighth, respectively. The performances showcased Cortland’s strength in middle-distance competition early in the outdoor season and demonstrated the team’s ability to place multiple runners among the top finishers in a competitive field.

Cortland also produced solid finishes in the sprint events. Lassad Richards placed fifth in the 200 meters with a time of 22.27 seconds and followed that performance with a third-place finish in the 400 meters at 51.10 seconds. His consistent results across both sprint distances helped highlight the Red Dragons’ speed and versatility on the track.

In the hurdles, Travis Iwuagwu finished third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.26 seconds, while teammate Evan Cruz placed fifth in 15.50 seconds. Declan Kennedy contributed another strong performance in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing fourth with a time of 57.10 seconds. These results emphasized Cortland’s continued development in hurdle events and added to the team’s growing list of nationally competitive marks this season.

Cortland’s relay team also delivered a competitive showing. The Red Dragons’ 4×400-meter relay squad finished third with a time of 3:31.13, continuing the team’s success in relay competition this season. Relay events often rely heavily on teamwork and smooth baton exchanges, and Cortland’s strong performance reflected the athletes’ coordination and preparation.

The Red Dragons also found success in several field events. In the pole vault, Vegan Petersen finished second with a clearance of 4.35 meters, while Skylar McFarling placed fourth after clearing 4.20 meters. Brady Melious earned third place in both the long jump and the triple jump, highlighting the team’s strength in jumping events and its ability to compete across multiple disciplines.

Taoig Cypher demonstrated versatility across multiple events. He placed second in the high jump, fourth in the javelin, and seventh in the triple jump, contributing valuable points for Cortland in several field competitions. His ability to perform well in multiple events illustrates the kind of well-rounded athletes the program continues to develop.

The throwing events also featured strong performances from the Red Dragons. Jason Zaita placed fourth in the discus and seventh in the shot put, while Sean Keane finished fifth in the shot put and sixth in the discus. Additional top-eight finishes came from teammates Travis Firkins and Quinn Jennings, further strengthening the team’s overall performance at the meets.

Overall, the weekend’s results showed Cortland’s depth across nearly every event category. With multiple athletes producing nationally ranked marks and strong finishes, the Red Dragons continue to build momentum as the outdoor track and field season progresses. As the team moves toward the upcoming conference and regional competitions, these performances suggest Cortland could remain competitive against some of the top programs in Division III athletics.
