Dragons Fall Short in 56-52 Loss to New Paltz in SUNYAC Championship

Josh Michel · March 5, 2026

CORTLAND, N.Y. — The SUNY Cortland Athletics women’s basketball team saw its bid for a SUNYAC championship slip away Saturday in dramatic fashion, falling 56–52 to SUNY New Paltz Hawks in a tightly contested title game that stretched down to the final seconds.

The defeat ends Cortland’s bid to capture back‑to‑back conference titles, but the Red Dragons (23‑4, 17‑1 SUNYAC) remain in a strong position for an at‑large berth into the Division III national tournament, with selection committee decisions set to be announced Monday.

New Paltz (25‑2, 17‑1 SUNYAC), already having defeated Cortland twice during the regular season, sealed its fifth SUNYAC tournament title in seven years in a game marked by momentum swings and gritty defensive play. The Hawks earned the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament with the victory.

The game was a tale of two halves, with New Paltz finishing the first half on an emphatic run to gain control. After a tight first quarter that saw Cortland lead 12‑10, the Hawks unleashed a 14‑0 surge over the final six minutes of the second quarter, taking a 26‑19 lead into halftime. The Red Dragons struggled to find an offensive rhythm during that span as New Paltz’s defense applied pressure and limited easy looks near the basket.

Despite the halftime deficit, Cortland fought back in the second half, cutting into the margin behind the leadership of senior Kaeli McAnally and Brooke Tillotson. McAnally led the Red Dragons with 16 points, while Tillotson added 13 points and four rebounds. Sophomore standout Joleen Lusk contributed seven points and seven rebounds as part of a balanced attack.

The Hawks were led by tournament MVP Brianna Fitzgerald, whose all‑around performance included 21 points, six rebounds, four steals, four assists, and three blocks. Teammates Hannah Vanderzee and Karly Wittenbauer also finished in double digits, combining for 23 points and providing the balanced scoring necessary to withstand Cortland’s comeback effort.

After pulling within two at 46‑44 early in the fourth quarter, Cortland couldn’t complete the rally. McAnally’s layup brought the Red Dragons within two again at 54‑52 with under six minutes to play, but New Paltz’s defense held firm. Fitzgerald’s free throw with 19 seconds left extended the lead, and Cortland missed a potential tying three‑pointer with under eight seconds remaining as time expired.

The loss marked another narrow defeat at the hands of the Hawks, with all three matchups between the two teams this season decided by four points or fewer.

Despite the disappointment, Cortland’s season is far from over. The Red Dragons will await their fate in the NCAA Division III Tournament, where they are poised to earn one of the at‑large berths available through the selection process. With an impressive resume and strong metrics in the NCAA Power Index (NPI), Cortland could draw a favorable draw in the national field.

New Paltz, meanwhile, will carry momentum into the national tournament as the SUNYAC’s representative. The Hawks’ dynamic play and championship experience make them a threat in the early rounds of March play.

For Cortland, the focus now turns to recovery and preparation as the team sets its sights on extending its season and contending on the national stage.
