CORTLAND NY– The Cortland Men’s basketball team is sitting in first place with six games left, but they know the season is far from over and knowing that there is a motto that the team stands by. Don’t get comfortable.
Cortland entered the break with a strong start to the season but during the break were met by strong and well-disciplined teams like Gustavus and Dubuque that gave them a look at unfamiliar competition while beginning the push towards the SUNYAC standings. The Red Dragons emphasized limiting transition opportunities and controlling the pace, allowing them to remain competitive against several regional opponents, putting them at a 15-4 record.
Defense seems to be a key emphasis for the Red Dragons as they have held every team below their overall scoring averages since coming back from winter break. Cortland increased ball pressure and improved its rebounding effort, forcing opponents into contested shots late in possessions. That approach helped the Red Dragons stay within reach in close games, particularly on the road and at neutral sites. Cortland’s head coach Maurice Kearney said during an interview “defense is the focal point to most victories, so we take that very seriously.”
Offensively, Cortland relied on balanced scoring rather than a single primary option. Multiple players contributed across the stat sheet, combining scoring with assists and defensive production. Ball movement remained a priority, as the Red Dragons focused on patient half-court execution instead of quick perimeter shots.
The Red Dragons have also used this time to increase involvement from other players on the bench, which has added a spark to their play on the court. They are now running a 9-man rotation as of right now and they have been running into a lot of success from it. The expanded rotation has given Cortland more flexibility entering the heart of SUNYAC competition.
“We want to establish to the other team every time we play that we simply just want it more than them,” said senior captain Kendall Arcuri.
As the spring semester has started, the Red Dragons mainly have away games from here on out. These will be crucial away games and if they continue this stretch of strong play, it will put them in the position to host the playoffs and get a homecourt advantage.
Conference opponents are expected to challenge Cortland’s ability to execute late in games. Turnovers, rebounding and free-throw shooting will be key factors as the Red Dragons navigate a schedule filled with closely matched teams. Maintaining defensive intensity while improving offensive efficiency will be essential for moving forward.
With conference play underway, SUNY Cortland men’s basketball enters the second half of the season aiming to build momentum and establish consistency. If the progress shown over winter break carries into SUNYAC competition, the Red Dragons could position themselves as a difficult matchup as the postseason approaches.
Cortland men’s basketball has won their last 8 straight games and are in the position to host the playoffs for the first time in over a decade.
