Behind the Scenes: Balancing the Student-Athlete Lifestyle

Kayla Wasserman · February 16, 2026

Being a part of Cortland Athletics means consistent hard work and determination for self-improvement, along with contributing to the team’s performance. Putting the “Student” in Student-Athlete can have its struggles, which can create overwhelming emotions. There are several aspects and strategies to help manage this lifestyle, benefiting your college experience as a whole.

Time Management

Between homework, attending classes, practices, lifts, and games, things can pile up unexpectedly. Staying on top of your schedule can help you find time to prioritize getting important things done. After creating a manageable routine, you’ll be carrying less stress about what to do and when to do it, since it’s already figured out. Writing down assignments when they’re given to you (digitally or physically) helps you stay organized and know when assignments are due. One of the best feelings is knocking out a list of assignments and being able to cross them off. One by one, the stress becomes less.

Mindset

The idea of a student-athlete is always easier said than done. Athletic performance, tough classes, busy schedules, friendships, and mental struggles can all play their part in how you go about your semester. A mindset switch is ultimately up to the person because realistically, you can start any day. It’s just a matter of how determined you are to reach that version of yourself. How you start your day off is the most important factor that goes into this change. Thinking positively about what is to come in your day can help you gain more motivation.

Rest

With a busy schedule, it’s difficult finding time to wind down unless it’s before bed. Taking advantage of your nightly routine as a way to “reset” and rest can allow your mind to be at ease. You know your own body. What works for some people might not align with a teammate’s, but it’s all about figuring out what makes you feel most enlightened. For some this, could mean stretching morning and night, using a massage gun, heating pads, rollers, or seeking help from the athletic trainers.

Academic Resources & Opportunities

As an athlete at Cortland, study hours are required. Taking advantage of these to get work done is something I found extremely beneficial academically, especially if you’re leaving early in the week for an away trip. Along with this, if you ever find yourself struggling, your professors and advisors are there to help. They offer office hours as well as guidance with future plans, tutoring, or general academic support when you’re struggling. Some may think it’s embarrassing to reach out and ask for assistance, but learning to use your resources to their fullest potential can lead you down the right path in the long run.

Overall, these steps take time. Figuring out what works best for you is just another step in the right direction, but balancing everything is key. So when you do get your days off, rest, hang out with friends, go out to eat or have a movie night, whatever sets you up for success is important. Keep in mind, being a student-athlete is not easy, so be hard-working while also having fun.
