SUNY Cortland’s New Global Passport Program

Keira Ann Remington · February 13, 2026

SUNY Cortland’s International Programs Office tries something new to motivate students to study abroad with its free Global Passport program.

For the spring semester, at least 20 students will have the $165 passport fee covered with applications due by Thursday, Feb. 26. Based on this spring semester’s success, there will be more opportunities in the Fall.

The program aims to eliminate the burden of paying for a passport, especially for students who are struggling financially. Current students must be eligible for TAP, a Pell Grant, or be a first-generation student. To get the best out of the program, they should plan on studying abroad while attending SUNY Cortland.

The International Programs Office will prioritize applicants that won’t be able to travel without financial assistance, have never had an adult U.S. passport, or if they’re a first-year student.

“By prioritizing student, the program expands access to global experiences and helps ensure that study abroad is attainable, inclusive and equitable for a broader range of SUNY Cortland students,” said Daniela Baban Hurrle, the SUNY Cortland Director of International Programs.

Not only will the new initiative cover passport expenses, but the International Programs Office will also help students apply for a passport using a step-by-step guide. They have also teamed up with Career Services to take passport photos, so students can save money and don’t have to travel off campus to take said photos.

The International Programs Office and United States Postal Service have hosted plenty of on-campus Passport Fairs to assist students with the application process for over 15 years. These fairs help students, but according to Hurrle, this new system improves knowledge about the passport application process by giving students in-depth help.

“By reducing obstacles and providing comprehensive guidance, the program motivates students to take the first critical step toward international experiences,” said Hurrle.

Studying abroad offers students an incredible opportunity to expand their perspective on global life. They get hands-on experience for their majors, career advantage, and cultural diversity. SUNY Cortland offers a variety of places students can go depending on degrees, such as Costa Rica, Spain, France, and more.

Studying abroad can be stressful, but SUNY Cortland prides itself on helping their students thrive. Red Dragons should be encouraged to attend info sessions about passports and international travel for desired programs. Students can contact studyabroad@cortland.edu for further questions or visit the office located in Old Main, Room 129.
