As fall is approaching, various food chains are preparing by coming out with their seasonal, mainly pumpkin spice, menu items. Two of the most popular coffee houses that offer this beloved flavor are none other than Dunkin’ and Starbucks. I mean, nothing says a cozy fall morning like stopping at your favorite coffee shop to enjoy a warm and tasty treat. The question is, who does pumpkin spice the best?
Affordability:
Dunkin’ is widely known for its low prices in comparison to Starbucks. While the average Starbucks drink can range from $5-$7, the price range for Dunkin’ drinks is only $3-$5. Now, most would not think anything of this cost variation; however, for college students trying to save money, a few dollars truly make all the difference.
Convenience:
For Cortland students, especially, Dunkin’ is much more accessible as we are lucky enough to have one right here on campus. It is a quick and easy stop on the way to class because it is on the bottom floor of Corey Union. This makes it an ideal location between the residence halls and academic buildings. Our nearest Starbucks is only about a 6-minute drive away, but for some students who do not have a car on campus, it is not within a reasonable or convenient distance.
Pumpkin Spice Latte:
The signature pumpkin spice latte is famously the most cherished fall drink amongst all the ones that Dunkin’ and Starbucks offer. If you’re looking for a sugary, less coffee-tasting drink with hints of pumpkin pie and vanilla, then Dunkin is the choice for you. However, if you enjoy the richer, more authentic pumpkin spice flavor accompanied by a strong espresso taste, then Starbucks is the winner. It all depends on preference, but many claim to enjoy Dunkin’s sweetness over Starbucks’ bitterness.
Pumpkin Muffin:
Although both Dunkin’ and Starbucks sell pumpkin muffins, each one is significantly different than its competitor. Dunkin’ has a soft, cake-like pumpkin muffin with sweet glaze and crumbly toppings. Contrastingly, Starbucks’ pumpkin muffin is rich and moist, with a tangy cream cheese filling. Some may find the prominent cream cheese center off-putting, but for those wanting a savory experience rather than sweet, the Starbucks pumpkin muffin could be for you.
Pumpkin Loaf:
While the Starbucks pumpkin loaf has consistently been available year-round, Dunkin’ has just newly added its version of one to its 2025 fall menu. Known for their sweetness, the Dunkin’ pumpkin loaf is a mix of vanilla and pumpkin pie, with a delicate cream cheese icing that just melts in your mouth. On the other hand, Starbucks’ loaf is dense with a blend of autumn spices and pumpkin seeds on top that provide a slight crunch. Overall, Dunkin’ is perfect if you prefer a sugary, dessert-like treat, but if you like a more traditional, comforting pumpkin spice flavor, then Starbucks is the ideal choice.
These coffee shops are popular and thriving for a reason, as each satisfies its own customers’ needs. During the fall season, especially, they attract additional business with their signature styles of pumpkin spice treats. I hope you find your preference of these two networks, so the next time you’re craving the beloved flavor on a crisp autumn day, you’ll know right where to go.
