SUNY Cortland Womens Soccer Delivers Shutout

Josh Michel · September 22, 2025

CORTLAND, N.Y. — The SUNY Cortland women’s soccer team edged out Alfred University in a thrilling contest, which resulted in a score of 1-0 on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at Holloway Field, thanks to a late first-half goal and a lockdown and disciplined defense.

Cortland improves to 3-2-1 for the season; Alfred drops to 4-2-1.

Final: Cortland 1, Alfred 0.

Location: Holloway Field, Cortland, N.Y.

Game Summary

Gianna Cirilla from Pattersonville (Schalmont) scored the lone goal for Cortland in the 44th minute, just before halftime. The game-winner came off a corner kick taken by Julia DeTurris (Hicksville). Cirilla headed the ball, deflecting it off the right post and into the lower left corner of the net.

After halftime, Cortland had several chances to extend its lead. Leah Rehm (East Syracuse/East Syracuse-Minoa) nearly scored in the 50th minute following a strong run down the left side by Piper Klammer (Mahopac). In the 64th minute, Cortland fired two consecutive shots—by Tyla Vuotto (Lynbrook) and Sage Luke (Schenectady/Scotia-Glenville)—both saved by Alfred goalkeeper Kiani Barnard-Pratt.

Alfred also had opportunities. Early in the game, a corner kick in the ninth minute led to a header by Alex Ruzekowicz that was cleared off the goal line by Cortland’s defender Nyah Sinkler (Farmingville/Sachem East).

In the closing minutes, Alfred pressed, including a free kick attempt in the 85th minute, but Cortland held firm and maintained possession to see out the match.

Individual Performances

  • Gianna Cirilla: Her fourth goal of the season which leads the team.
  • Julia DeTurris: Delivered the assist via a well-placed corner kick, which ended up not only being the game-winning goal, but the game-winning assist.
  • Olivia Rouse (Springfield, VA/West Springfield): Posted her second shutout in three home games, making two saves.
  • Kiani Barnard-Pratt (Alfred): Recorded a season-high 11 saves, including several big stops to keep the game close.

Tactical Observations

Cortland dominated possession and created far more offensive pressure. The Red Dragons outshot Alfred 31-4 and had 12 shots on goal to Alfred’s three. They also enjoyed a major advantage in set-pieces, including corners (12 for Cortland, 3 for Alfred).

Defensively, the Red Dragons were disciplined. The entire back line held strong, with defenders stepping up on critical plays—especially on Alfred’s early corner and late free kick threats. The keeper’s composure also proved important in preserving the shutout.

What’s Next

Cortland will head on the road to face St. Lawrence on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 3 p.m. Alfred returns to Empire 8 conference action later in the weekend.

This was a gritty win for Cortland, as it took all facets of the game working well to come out on top. While the match was tight and the margin was narrow, the team showed resilience on both ends of the pitch. A timely goal, strong defense, and efficient offense were enough to bring home the victory. If Cortland hopes to make a deep run this season, performances like this —a mix of determination and composure —will likely become key.
