SUNY Cortland’s wide variety of intramural sports are starting back up again. From Basketball to a Turkey Trot IM sports have a sport for everyone; here is a preview for each one happening in the fall.
Volleyball: Intermural volleyball has a four vs. four league which runs from September 21st to December 5th. This league does not split up by gender so males and females can be on the same team or play against each other. Volleyball also offers a six vs. six tournament for all genders on October 24th. This tournament is not part of the four vs. four league. Volleyball games will take place in Lusk Field House.
Basketball: For basketball there is a four vs. four men’s league and a separate four vs. four women’s league. There is also a four vs four men’s rec league which is different from the men’s all school league. All three of these leagues go from September 28th to December 5th. Basketball games will be played the in Lusk Field House.
Broomball: Broomball is the most uncommon sport on this list with most kids never playing it before intramural. Broomball is played on ice and is a six vs. six style game including a goalie. Each game has two 15-minute halves. Games will be played at the Alumni Ice Arena in Park Center. Broomball is played in one league with men and women.
Turkey Trot: The Turkey Trot is a one-day event happening on November 23rd. The course for the event is a 5k around the SUNY Cortland campus. Both men and women participate together and the first male and female student to cross and the first male and female faculty or staff to cross are winners in their categories. The first 50 people to sign up get a free T-shirt, so sign up fast!
Flag Football: Intramural Flag Football has already started but athletes can still join teams as free agents. Flag Football is split into a men’s and women’s division. The men’s division runs from September 8th– October 19th and the women’s runs from September 7th – November 2nd. Flag Football is played 7v7 with 4 quarters on the intramural flag football field (Field #1).
Kickball: Intramural Kickball is played from September 18th through October 19th . Kickball is also played co-ed and is played on the intramural soccer field (Field #2). 8 players can play in the field at once.
Outdoor Soccer: Outdoor Soccer is the final sport in the fall and there is only one league for men and women. The league runs from September 15th through October 19th . Players can still join teams as free agents. Games are played on the intramural soccer field (Field #2).
If you never played sports in high school or sports were your life and you want something to do with your friends or to meet new people, intramurals are perfect and a fun way to get you out and moving. Typically, there is only one game per week making it perfect to match with other clubs and it won’t interfere with your classes/classwork.
