Alyssa Rich · September 16, 2025

Exploring the Outdoors with SUNY Cortland Outdoor Pursuits:

SUNY Cortland’s Outdoor Pursuits program offers students exciting opportunities to engage with nature and connect with their peers through several outdoor adventures. Designed to promote wellness, these trips are accessible to all students, regardless of experience level. Whether you are looking for a peaceful hike or a upbeat climb, Outdoor Pursuits has something to offer.

Each semester, Outdoor Pursuits organizes a wide range of trips that explore the beautiful nature areas surrounding Cortland and beyond. There are already planned trips, throughout September and beginning of October for students to sign up for in advance.

One of the most appealing aspects of the Pursuits trips is the cost, each trip is usually only $5 for students. This low fee covers transportation, gear, and guidance from trained trip leaders, making it an unbeatable deal for college students. The affordable pricing ensures that everyone has an opportunity to participate, regardless of budget. It’s part of the programs mission to make the outdoors inclusive and accessible to all student’s at SUNY Cortland.

Upcoming Trips:

Little Falls Climbing – This trip is a fun and beginner-friendly rock climbing trip, located along the Mohawk River in Little Falls, NY. This trip gives students the chance to climb real rock walls in a scenic outdoor setting.

Dwyer Paddling – This is relaxing activity, where students can kayack or canoe on the calm waters of the Dwyer Memorial Park area.

Watkins Glen Hike – This is a popular trip because Watkins Glen is famous for it’s beautiful gorges, 19 waterfalls, and scenic stone pathways – making it a must see spot for anyone in Western New York.

Taughannock and Lucifer Falls Hike – These two falls are the most breathtaking waterfalls in the Finger Lakes region. Taughannock Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls east of the Rockies, and Lucifer Falls in Robert H. Treman State Park are both major natural attractions near campus. This hike is also beginner friendly and offers amazing views within it’s trails and a new chance to explore iconic parks.

Student’s should take advantage of these amazing trips offered by SUNY Cortland Pursuits. They’re a great way to explore the outdoors, try new activities like climbing, paddling, and hiking, while meeting new friends – all while spending just $5. These trips make it easy and affordable to get outside, have fun, and make the most of your time at Cortland while the weather is still nice!
