The Most Iconic Moments of the 2025 VMAs

Gabriella Dietz · September 15, 2025

The 2025 VMAs were a must-watch night.. It was packed with monumental achievements for many artists, as well as generous tributes from others. For those who missed it, you might want to stick around for a recap of the highlights from the evening.

Lady Gaga is Booked and Busy

As if it wasn’t already iconic enough to be the most nominated artist at the VMAs, Lady Gaga was also double-booked for the night. She received the first award of artist of the year, and then, not even 15 minutes into the show, she had to leave to go perform at her own concert almost 20 miles away.

Mariah Carey Gets Her First VMA

The crowd was lively during Mariah Carey’s performance. She brought a world of energy with her ‘90s nostalgia that had them singing right along with her. Not only did her show amaze the audience, but they were also shocked when she acknowledged the fact that she had just received her first VMA in her speech. To wrap it all up with a humorous reference to her long, successful career, she just had to ask them, “What in the Sam Hill were you waiting for?”

Sabrina Carpenter’s Groundbreaking Night

After her incredible performance, where she showed support for the trans community, Sabrina Carpenter went on to win best album for “Short n’ Sweet” and was also named best pop artist. She graciously accepted her awards by stating her appreciation that her music can bring comfort to her fans in a world “full of criticism and discrimination and negativity.”

An Appropriate Tribute to Ozzy Osbourne

Steven Tyler, Yungblud, Joe Perry, and Nuno Bettencourt performed a medley of some of Ozzy Osbourne’s most beloved songs to honor him. Osbourne’s son, Jack Osbourne, and his grandchildren also took part in the farewell by delivering a special message to the heavy metal icon. During the final song, emotions were high as Ariana Grande was seen in the crowd looking stunned by the performance.

Busta Rhymes’ Tribute to Ananda Lewis

In accepting the Rock the Bells Visionary Award, Busta Rhymes took a moment to honor the late Ananda Lewis. He made sure the “incredible woman” was not forgotten as he made sure to pay respect to the inspiring MTV Host and VJ.

Sombr Makes His VMAs Debut

By performing two of his hits, “Back to Friends” and “12 to 12” from his debut album, I Barely Know Her, Sombr made his first-ever VMAs performance momentous. He also won Best Alternative Video for “Back to Friends”, which was his first Moon Person Award, and was nominated for Best New Artist. Sombr will be an unforgettable name in the music industry from here on out.

This year’s award show introduced the rising pop stars of our generation and commemorated the legacies of performers that we’ve lost. We also saw numerous firsts for some artists, as well as Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, and Sabrina Carpenter, taking home the most wins of the night. With the 2025 VMAs in the books, I cannot wait to see what amazing moments next year’s VMAs will bring.
