Suny Cortland isn’t just a place to take classes and earn your degree, but a community built to support student success outside of the classroom. From career help and internship help to mental health resources, our school offers a range of online and in-person tools that make navigating college life easier, more manageable, and will help you stay more connected.
Cortland Cupboard:
The Cortland Cupboard is an easy and judgment-free way to get support when you’re running low. It is an on campus food pantry located in the basement of Old Main, open to students who are in need of food and or personal hygiene items, free of cost. To get access, you just need to bring your student Id card to swipe. They are open from Monday- Thursday 8-6pm, and Friday from 8-5pm.
Counseling and Wellness Services:
The Counseling and Wellness Services promote the overall well-being and personal growth of our students through various services. Not only are counseling services offered but they offer things such as yoga, meditation, and hold events throughout the school year relating to wellness and mental health. One of students’ favorite events they have is actually coming right around the corner, hosted just in time for finals week. It’s called “PAWS for Stress”. It takes place each monday and Tuesday of finals weeks as a way for students to distress. There are dogs that are leashed and put in separate spaces in the student life center. There is also arts and crafts, massages, refreshments and games for students.
Career Services:
You’ve probably heard of Career Services and have a general idea of what it offers, but you might not realize just how many ways it can support your academic and post graduation journey. The career services are open Monday through Friday from 8 am – 430 pm. They offer things like personal headshots; free in the pop-up studio monday-thursday from 1-3pm, resume and cover letter building, mock interviews, internship assistance, and student employment services. Each staff member is extremely nice and dedicated to helping each student find success and create connections. Career services appointments can be made in person or online through “Handshake”, a career platform service for Gen Z where you can also look for internship and job opportunities. They also offer drop in hours as well!
Peer Tutoring:
Sometimes, the best help comes from someone who’s been in your shoes. Peer Tutoring connects you with fellow students who understand the course material and can explain it in a relatable, supportive way. Whether you need help preparing for a test or just clarifying a tough concept, this is a perfect way to get that assistance. Each peer tutor is trained to help you learn, and is eager to work with you! Each student is entitled to one hour of peer tutoring each week for each course they are enrolled in. Peer tutoring services are offered in the learning center (Van Housen) Monday through Friday from 830-430 pm, and you can schedule an appointment through MyRedDragon.
Night Owl:
If you’re most productive at night or have a packed schedule during the day, Night Owl is the perfect resource for you. This after-hours online tutoring service offers extra homework help when traditional support offices are closed, so you can get the assistance you need, right when you need it. Night owl is open to students for drop in hours (no appointment needed) Sunday through Thursday starting from 7 pm till midnight!
Don’t miss out on the resources available to you right now. College is a unique time in your life, and once you graduate, this level of support may not be as easily accessible. Take full advantage of the tools and services our school offers and make the most of them while you still can.
