Sophomore, Alyssa Haberlack Earns SUNYAC Women’s Diver of the Year! After two years of hard work and dedication Haberlack has endlessly shown improvement throughout her past two seasons.
Impressively, diving is a relatively recent sport that Haberlack has only just taken up here in Cortland. Haberlack, from Long Beach, NY, had a long talented career and passion for gymnastics and was a six-year member of her high school gymnastics team and placed sixth in Nassau County for her floor-exercise her senior year.
Haberlack’s impressive gymnastics career was a helpful contribution to her skills in entering the new world of diving, “I think that gymnastics has made me into the person I am today.” Haberlack confidently expresses, “It’s been very helpful to have that sort of foundation when trying to transfer to a different but similar sport.”
Just as much as her gymnastics career, Haberlack has grown a successful career so far in diving in just her first two years here.
At her first SUNYAC Championships last year, Haberlack placed 8th in 3-Meter and 9th in 1-Meter. By only her second SUNYACS Haberlack showed immense improvement placing 1st overall in 1-Meter and 3rd overall in the 3-Meter. Haberlack and her fellow teammate, Freshmen, Megan McLaughlin tied with the most points accumulated in the meet to earn CO-Diver of the SUNYAC-AMCC Championship meet.
“I’m honestly super happy with myself and my performance.” Proudly states Haberlack, “I got to compete with my best friends and the best team. It’s very fulfilling to get to succeed around the people you care about.”
SUNYACS, however, wasn’t her last stop of the season. After qualifying for Regionals earlier in the season, Haberlack then performed at Regional Diving Championships the next weekend where she placed 14th on the 1-Meter and 17th on the 3-Meter.
As for Haberlack’s in season accomplishments, she earned SUNYAC Diver of the week 7 times, while placing many personal bests in both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter at multiple dual meets and qualified for regionals very early in the season.
Haberlack has quickly established a successful diving career, demonstrating remarkable progress in a short time. With her talent, determination, and commitment, there is no doubt she will achieve even greater success in the next two years and that she earned her title as SUNYAC Diver of the year.
