Advising 101: 10 Unexpected Questions to Ask Your Advisor
As you prepare for registration, meeting with your academic advisor is crucial. You should have already received an email about being “Red Dragon Ready,” and one of the most important steps is having a productive advising meeting.
While discussing your fall classes and getting your registration PIN are essential, it’s also an opportunity to ask questions that will help shape your college journey. Here are 10 unexpected questions to ask during your advising meeting:
- What’s one thing students regret not doing sooner while in college?
- What campus resources do students often overlook?
- What are common mistakes students in my major face—and how can I avoid them?
- What classes have students in my major found most valuable (and why)?
- How can I explore a different major without completely switching right away?
- What do students with my major do after graduation?
- What internships, research, or study abroad opportunities should I consider?
- Are there any major-specific scholarships or other opportunities I should know about?
- Are there leadership opportunities on campus that complement my major?
- Do students in this major often study abroad? What are their experiences like?
