Millions of Americans flooded the streets on Saturday for the “Hands Off!” protests, a massive nationwide movement targeting the Trump administration’s controversial policies and its alliance with Elon Musk.
There was a rally on Main Street in Cortland on Saturday, April 5th where peaceful protesters held signs to join the widespread demonstration.
The protests were sparked by growing public outcry over the administration’s handling of social programs, concerns over preserving democracy and consumer protections. Critics argue that recent reforms spearheaded by Musk who is now serving as head of the Department of Government Efficiency have prioritized cost cutting measures that affect vulnerable populations.
“Hands off our rights, hands off our benefits, and hands off our democracy!” chanted demonstrators in Washington D.C., where thousands gathered near the Capitol, holding signs reading “Stop the Robbery of the Middle Class” and “Musk Ain’t for the Masses.”
Despite the scale and intensity of the demonstrations, law enforcement officials reported that the protests remained largely peaceful. No arrests were reported by midday Sunday, and in many cities, police officers were seen assisting with traffic flow and safety coordination.
In response, the Trump administration issued a statement defending its actions. “President Trump is committed to preserving and strengthening essential programs for American citizens,” Press Secretary Linda Vega said. “The real threat lies in Democrat-led efforts to extend these benefits to illegal immigrants, putting strain on our resources.”
The White House brushed off the protests as political and more about media attention than real concern. But with growing public frustration and the 2026 midterms coming up, one thing is clear, Americans are paying attention and taking action.
