The Fashion Club, in partnership with MOVE, will host its first Fashion Show on April 18, at 7pm in Jacobus’s Lounge. The showcase will count with the presence of six designers, thirteen models and a diverse number of fashion trends.
The president of the club, Otilia Rivas, a Senior majoring in Communications with a double minor in Management and Political Science, explained that the club decided to join forces with MOVE, Men of Value and Excellence, to bring and culminate the message of creativity, self-expression and empowerment through fashion, and together, for the first time, the clubs will be hosting a fashion showcase event.

“We tried to create open space for everyone because fashion is a form of self-ex expression and everybody expresses themselves differently. Everyone is welcome in the show,” said Rivas.
The president of Fashion club explained that during the showcase they will have 13 models, all of them being SUNY Cortland students, and six segments that correspond to the six designers that will be coming to the show to present their brand. The showcase will work as an entrepreneurship event, because all the designers that will be attending the event have their own small business. With the theme of streetwear, the designers, three of them coming from New York City, will show unique pieces of their brands.
The showcase will also have food catering from the local restaurant La Bamba, desserts and a photo booth.
The club, that had been dismantled, was brought back to campus three years ago by new founding members – one of the designers coming to the show being a Cortland alumnus and one of the founding members of the club, and has been active on campus since then.
The Fashion Club counts with a diverse E-board that have different styles, perspectives, and are all also members of the EOP program. It’s a creative outlet on campus that focuses on generating a safe space where individuals can express themselves through fashion, whether it be in workshops, where they can customize and wok hands on items, or in conversation with one another about fashion, its culture, history, and trends.
In the past three years, they have been promoting events on campus where they do seminars and hands on workshops, such as jewelry stations and workshops, patch it up workshops, “created you own T-shirts” events and many more.
“In February, we did an event for Black History Month, and we did beyond the runway, which was a jeopardy culminating to black culture in fashion,” said Rivas. “We like to diversify and have different things and different workshops throughout the year. Some are more “hands on,” and some work differently, more educational, like seminars, but we have fun in all of them.”
The club meets on Thursdays at 6pm, in Corey Union, room 209.
