Explore SUNY Cortland Study Abroad Programs

With the Summer Study Abroad deadline coming up, here is a look into what SUNY Cortland has to offer if you are looking to get a study abroad experience during the summer. This is a perfect opportunity for you if you want to study abroad but you have a heavy major. The deadline to apply for summer is March 1st, and for all of these programs you will need a 2.5 GPA.

Columbia: Ecologies, Economies, and Cultures.

This program is from May 19th to June 4th. This course explores the intersection of environment, culture, and economy across three distinct regions of Colombia. You will go to Quindío to Engage with local communities to understand the relationship between conservation efforts and sustainable economic practices. You will also visit the Amazonas to examine how ecotourism interacts with indigenous cultures and its role in reducing extractive activities. Finally you will reach the Caribbean to investigate marine conservation as both a driver of tourism and a tool for environmental protection. Students will earn 3 credits for ECO 329 during this 16-day program.

Costa Rica: Universidad Veritas 

Costa Rica is an ideal destination to study and improve Spanish in a tropical setting. This warm, welcoming country boasts over 621 miles of coastline, diverse tropical forests, stunning beaches, and rich biodiversity, including 855 bird species and 12,000 plant species. San José, the capital and home to Universidad VERITAS, offers vibrant cultural experiences with museums, restaurants, pubs, and theaters. Founded in 1975 as part of Universidad Autónoma de Centro América (UACA), VERITAS is now a respected independent university with nearly 1,500 students, located just minutes from downtown. This program offers multiple study options in May, June, July, and August. Students can choose a 5-week session (May 24 – June 28 or July 5 – August 9) with either 7 or 8 credits, combining Spanish and elective courses. A 4-week session (May 30 – June 28) is available for students taking only Spanish. Elective course options include one 4-credit elective (5 weeks, 4 credits) or two 4-credit electives (5 weeks, 8 credits).

Ireland: University College Cork

This program runs from June 28th to July 26th and is one of the most popular here. You can earn 3 credits in literature and 3 credits in history for a total of 6 credits. University College Cork (UCC) is located near the city center of Cork, Ireland’s second-largest city. Named University of the Year 2015 by The Sunday Times of Ireland, UCC is part of the National University of Ireland. Cork, a lively cultural hub and the 2005 European Capital of Culture, offers a welcoming environment for students. UCC’s International Education Office provides strong support to help students adjust. The Faculty of Arts hosts an annual International Summer School in Irish Studies, exploring Irish identity through history, literature, and culture.

Italy: The Arts of Italy

This program runs from June 16th to June 26th, and you will earn 3 credits in ATH 329. The Arts of Italy is an intensive 10-day summer study abroad course exploring central and northern Italy. Based in Florence, Verona, and Venice, students will examine the art, architecture, and cultural history of these influential artistic centers. The course focuses on the role of aristocratic patrons in shaping Renaissance art while drawing connections between historical and contemporary works. Through museum visits, gallery tours, and excursions to key cultural sites, students will analyze the evolution of artistic expression.

Thailand: Ecotourism 

This program runs from July 18th to July 31st. his program examines sustainability in ecotourism, exploring its cultural, environmental, and economic impacts. Students will study ecology and the effects of tourism on natural areas and wildlife. Through hands-on experiences in Thai culture and remote villages, participants will collaborate with local communities on organic farming, reforestation, and English education projects. The program concludes with bamboo rafting, elephant trekking, and bungee jumping for an unforgettable adventure.
