Blood Clot Sidelines the Next Face of the NBA

Josh Michel · March 3, 2025

The San Antonio Spurs’ young superstar and likely the next face of the NBA, Victor Wembanyama has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2024-2025 NBA season. This is due to deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in his right shoulder, or more simply explained as a blood clot. This diagnosis, announced on February 20, 2025, has significant implications for both his career and the Spurs’ organization as a whole.

Understanding the Injury

Deep vein thrombosis is a condition where a blood clot forms in a deep vein, often leading to pain and swelling. While DVT typically occurs in the legs, Wembanyama’s case is unusual, with the clot located in his upper body—a scenario present in only about 1 in 10 DVT cases. The Spurs have described this as an “isolated incident” and anticipate a full recovery for Wembanyama by the next season.

Impact on Wembanyama’s Season and Career

Before this setback, Wembanyama was delivering an exceptional sophomore season, averaging 24.3 points, 11 rebounds, and 3.8 blocks per game. His defensive prowess had positioned him as the frontrunner for the Defensive Player of the Year award. However, NBA regulations require players to participate in a minimum of 65 games to qualify for such honors, and with Wembanyama sidelined after 46 games, he will no longer meet this criterion.

The nature of DVT necessitates careful management to prevent complications. Treatment typically involves anticoagulant medications to dissolve the clot and prevent new ones from forming. The Spurs’ medical team will likely monitor Wembanyama closely to ensure a safe return to play. Historically, athletes like Brandon Ingram have successfully returned to professional sports following similar diagnoses, suggesting a positive outlook for Wembanyama. citeturn0news25

Implications for the San Antonio Spurs

Wembanyama’s absence is a significant blow to the Spurs, who currently hold the 12th seed in the Western Conference with a 23-29 record. Their playoff aspirations are now in jeopardy, especially considering the recent health challenges faced by head coach Gregg Popovich, who is recovering from a stroke and has stepped away for the remainder of the season. Assistant coach Mitch Johnson has assumed interim head coaching duties during this period.

In response to Wembanyama’s injury, the Spurs may need to adjust their strategy, potentially focusing on player development and evaluating talent for the future. The team’s performance in the remaining season could also influence their position in the upcoming NBA Draft, where they hold favorable picks, including an unprotected first-round selection from the Atlanta Hawks.

Wembanyama’s Off-Court Activities

Despite his injury, Wembanyama has remained engaged with the San Antonio community. He was recently spotted at a local antique mall, indicating his commitment to supporting local businesses and maintaining a presence in the area during his recovery.

Looking Ahead

While the near future presents challenges, the Spurs and Wembanyama are optimistic about his recovery and return for the 2025-2026 season. The team’s management will need to navigate the remainder of the season without their star player, focusing on long-term goals and the continued development of their roster. For Wembanyama, listening to medical guidance and prioritizing his health will be crucial to ensure a successful comeback and the continuation of his promising NBA career.
