Beneficial Campus Resources

Alyssa Rich · March 3, 2025

Navigating college life can be both exciting and challenging. Having the right resources at your disposal can make all the difference. From writing help to mental support and career guidance, SUNY Cortland offers key resources to support students.

The Writing Center:

The writing center at SUNY Cortland is an essential resource designed to support students throughout their writing journey. Whether you’re just starting an assignment or fine-tuning your final draft, the Writing Center offers personalized guidance to help enhance your writing skills and boost your academic success.

Students can meet with tutors one-on-one to get individual feedback on their writing, helping students to understand areas they might need to work on.

The Writing Center provides support for all types of writing, including essays, research papers, creative writing, lab reports, and even resumes. For students looking to improve their grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation, there is assistance in identifying and correcting errors as well.

The Writing Center provides both in-person and online tutoring options so students can access support regardless of their location or schedule.

Those who are interested can book an appointment online through the SUNY Cortland website under myRedDragon. The hours are listed, and they are open all days of the week, except weekends.

Counseling Center:

The counseling center allows students to seek help and support to manage mental health and well-being. The center provides individual therapy sessions for students struggling with stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges. It offers a confidential and supportive space for students to discuss their concerns.

For students, these services are free and are ultimately short-term therapeutic services to facilitate social and educational needs, not just personal (mental). For students who may need specialized care or long-term therapy, the counseling center offers referrals to off-campus mental health professionals or other community services. This center does its best to meet your wants and needs.

The center also works proactively to promote mental wellness by educating students about common challenges and offering resources for maintaining emotional health. Promoting a safe space for all individuals who visit and seek assistance.

Career Services:

The career services office is a necessary resource for all students seeking support with their career development and job search.

Specifically, the center helps students explore various career paths, industries, and professional opportunities based on their interests, skills, and academic backgrounds. Career advisors assist students in identifying potential careers that align with their goals.

The center provides resources for students to search for job opportunities, internships, and co-op programs. They often host job fairs and networking events on campus that connect students directly with potential employers. Additionally, Career Services works closely with faculty and alumni to facilitate valuable connections and provide all students with insider knowledge.

Whether exploring new career options, preparing for the job market, or seeking to build a strong professional network, Career Services equips students with the tools and knowledge they need to succeed in all careers.

Cortland Cupboard:

The SUNY Cortland cupboard is a campus food pantry that is open for all students who need food or personal hygiene products.

The Cupboard usually offers non-perishable food items, snacks, and other grocery essentials to help students who are facing financial challenges. In addition to food, they also offer hygiene products, toiletries, and other necessities to ensure students have access to the essentials they need to maintain their health.

The Cupboard is often supported by donations from students, faculty, staff, and local organizations, fostering a sense of community and solidarity on campus. This board is open Monday through Friday, so don’t be afraid to stop in.

The resources at SUNY Cortland are all integral to supporting students’ academic, personal, and professional growth. Whether you’re refining your writing skills, managing your mental health, navigating your career path, or seeking basic needs, these services are dedicated to ensuring that every student has the tools and support they need to succeed. With these resources in place, SUNY Cortland fosters a supportive and inclusive environment where students can thrive both academically and personally.
