This summer, Cortland is offering a study abroad program to Dingle, Ireland designed to provide anyone who joins a unique educational experience. For 3 weeks participants get to experience Dingle and spend their days painting along the beautiful Atlantic coast.
From May 27th to June 18th 2025, students can get the chance to earn 6 credit hours by painting, drawing and exploring the beauty of Ireland all while earning academic credit.
The deadline to apply is coming up quickly. March 1st will be the last day anyone interested in participating can send in their application.
This specific program does not require you to be an art major to apply, but it is suggested that you have some sort of interest or passion for painting and drawing. The program is split between lectures, group work, and individual work.
Monday through Friday, students can expect to start their morning with a brief lecture and breakfast. Mornings will then continue with designated time in the studio for drawing.
Afternoons will be spent outdoors enjoying Ireland’s scenery and after dinner, time will be set for critiques and talks with local artists. Friday evenings and weekends will be left free for independent work time or travel.
It is encouraged that students take their free time to explore the country. Nearby cities like Killarney, Limerick or Cork are filled with their own unique history, culture, and attractions.
Traveling around Ireland allows students the chance to understand Irish delicacy and traditions as well as enhance personal growth by gaining new cultural experiences.
If you’re not up for more travel, experiencing the local Dingle culture is just as exciting. Dingle is known for its genuinely friendly atmosphere and the colorful town is filled with activities.
Life in Dingle consists of hikes along the coastline, water sports like kayaking, musical performances, art galleries, shopping and much more.
Not only will students have the opportunity to improve their art skills, but traveling abroad allows participants to gain cultural knowledge and form lifelong bonds. This course is designed to incorporate Dingle’s culture and environment into its curriculum.
The Dingle peninsula is world famous for its scenery which include mountains, farmland, villages and beaches. Participants will stay in shared cottages in the Town of Dingle.
Professor George Dugan originally founded and led the program from the 1990’s to 2015. Now, Professor Stephen Clark has taken over and will be teaching students to paint and draw abroad this summer.
Prof. Clark, the leader of the Painting and Drawing program, is a nationally and regionally exhibiting artist. Students can expect to receive high-quality learning and evolve a deeper understanding of painting and drawing with Prof. Clarks instruction.
