Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR (PND) have teamed up to create their first full collaborative album, $ome $exy $ongs 4 U, released on February 14th. The two go way back to 2013 when PND was the first person to be signed to Drake’s record label OVO. The long-awaited album is an hour and fourteen minutes long with a total of 21 tracks, blending their styles together. Not only do they have songs together but they each have a few solo tracks. Together they delivered an album filled with slow R&B mixed with rap.
This album may not be for everyone. Especially if Drake is not to your taste or if you are on the Kendrick Lamar side of the rap beef. But for his loyal fans and PND lovers, this album is for you. The first track on the album is “CN TOWER” which shows a little bit of the two artists’ Canadian roots. The track sets the calm and smooth vibe of the album. Followed by tracks like “MOTH BALLS,” “RAINING IN HOUSTON,” “SOMEBODY LOVES ME,” and many others.
The fifth track then did something not as common, “SPIDER-MAN SUPERMAN,” samples “The Real Her” by Drake featuring Lil Wayne and Andre 3000 which is on one of his older albums from 2011, Take Care. Among artists, it is not common to see them sample one of their own pieces. On top of this Drake recently announced while he was on tour in Australia that in the coming future, he will be doing something besides this collaboration, a solo album. Many fans and critics have been speculating that with him sampling a track from one of his most iconic coming albums he may bring an “older Drizzy” feel. However The artist himself has spoken in the past on his old music and finding that feel again, he has spoken on implementing his older feel here and there but it seems he explores the different pieces of music he can put out there, especially in the recent years.
Just a few more songs into the album Drake also mentions his long and ongoing rap beef with Kendrick Lamar. On the track named after Young Thug’s lawyer from his recent trial, “BRIAN STEEL” the artist says “Broski just hit me, ‘put all the beef on the side’”. Then on the very next track “GIMME A HUG” he goes further to say “F*ck a rap beef, I’m tryna get the party lit”. These two mentions of the beef between the artists show listeners Drake’s mixed feelings on the situation. The verse in “BRIAN STEEL” shows how he is still angered over what has happened but then on “GIMME A HUG” he gives a more careless feel and makes it look as if he doesn’t have time to worry about it and that the beef is over.
The overall vibe of the album is slow R&B with a relaxing and sensual sound. However, there are a couple of upbeat tracks. For example, track fourteen explores a funky club beat. “NOKIA” is an upbeat banger that will probably be the most popular song on the album. It is a perfect song to dance along to. Right after is track fifteen, “DIE TRYING.” On this track, Drake experiments with pop music, widening his music range. The track is a catchy beat with acoustic guitar mixed with Drake, PND, and featuring artist Yebba’s vocals.
These are just a few of the many tracks on the album. Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR together create a vibe that no one else can through music. Weather you like them or not, $ome $exy $ongs 4 U is defentily worth a listen if you haven’t already.
