As the Cortland swim and dive team approach their sunyac championships this week they reflect on the rigorous training and long road to get to where they are now in preparation for championships.
This year’s conference championships are looking a lot different from what the sunyac conference is typically used to and is a change that could possibly be in Cortland’s favor. Cortland’s biggest rival and back-to-back sunyac champions, Geneseo, has left the conference and will not be competing at sunyacs this year.
This has given Cortland high hopes for their first claim to sunyac championships title in 12 years. However, a new exciting change has been thrown into the mix. Four new schools from the AMCC conference have joined the championships meet, creating a new competition for Cortland. This change does not seem to have the athletes too worried and rather even more motivated, “I think the team is very ready both mentally and physically. I am very excited about the new competition this gives us an opportunity to race for something other than a time!” Senior and captain Mason Rowlands says.
While there’s a lot of changes and many things to prepare for, it has created a much anticipated and exciting SUNYACS for the Cortland team. Cortland has completed a month-long intersession of training during winter break which included a training trip to Puerto Rico, 12 meets, 7 dual meets, a 5-2 record and intense training under their belt to prepare them for a big conference meet to come.
SUNYAC All-Conference Championship Meet is Wednesday Feb. 19th – Saturday Feb. 22nd.
