The Cortland Club Wrestling team returned from a well-earned winter break with a renewed sense of purpose. With a new head coach and an official membership in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA), the program is taking a major step forward. This move brings both exciting opportunities and new challenges as the team prepares for the season ahead.
Head Coach Keanu, who joined the program last semester, has already seen significant progress. He recognizes the team’s dedication and ability to adapt to change.
“We have made huge strides as a team, and I am proud of how the athletes have embraced the adjustments,” said Keanu. “Joining the NCWA is a big move for us, and we are excited to prove ourselves in this new competitive landscape.”
To start the semester strong, the team has committed to an intense training regimen. Practices are focused on conditioning, technical drills, and live sparring sessions. During a recent practice, wrestlers pushed through grueling cardio circuits before drilling takedown techniques, ensuring they are prepared for the level of competition they will face. Team leaders have also stepped up, fostering an environment where wrestlers push each other to improve every day.

With their NCWA membership, Cortland Club Wrestling is stepping up to face tougher opponents on a larger stage. While matchups are still being finalized, the team is preparing to enter the Middle Atlantic Wrestling Association (MAWA) Tournament, an opportunity to test their skills and make an early statement in their new league.
Jack Giovanello, a returning team member and this semester’s club president, believes this transition marks the start of something special.
“We are eager to step onto the mat and showcase what we have been working on,” said Giovanello. “This is a new beginning for our program, and we are ready to take on the challenge.”
Beyond competition, the team is focused on building a culture of discipline, teamwork, and support. Wrestlers have taken part in leadership meetings and team-building activities to strengthen their bond. Whether it is refining techniques in the wrestling room or encouraging each other during conditioning drills, the team is growing both on and off the mat.
As the season unfolds, fans can expect an exciting journey filled with intense matches, standout performances, and defining moments for the program. With new leadership and a focused mindset, Cortland Club Wrestling is ready to make an impact in the NCWA.
