This past Saturday the SUNY Cortland swimming and diving teams competed in a dual meet against Ithaca College. This meet has been given the nickname, “the Cortaca Tub”.
The meet showed a good fight from the Red Dragons, ultimately with the men’s team finishing 110-190, and the women’s team finishing 96-204.
The results were compiled with the rest of the SUNYAC Conference, and put Cortland’s men and women’s team as the #1 team.
On the men’s side, the opening 400-yard medley relay saw the team of Makiah Poli (Sr.), Zack Kreiley (So.), Ethan Domanico (Sr.), and Trent deHaan (Sr.) place fourth in a time of 3:46.80.
Despite the overall team loss, the Cortland men placed first in several individual events. Junior Kellen Dickman won both the 200-yard butterfly (2:04.50) and the 100-yard butterfly (51.84). Senior Hunter Sugrue-Neundorf won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.88). Junior Dominic Fratto won the 100-yard backstroke in 54.67.
Freshman Ayden Baxter also had a sensational meet, placing third in all three of his events. Baxter competed in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:21.24), the 500-yard freestyle (5:02.38), and the 400-yard individual medley (4:28.15).
In the 50-yard freestyle, senior Dylan Anselment placed 2nd in 21.86. In the 100-yard freestyle, sophomore Jack Clark placed 2nd in 49.22. In the 200-yard backstroke, senior captain Sean Zupko placed 2nd in 2:02.55.
In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the team of Anselment, Dickman, Sugrue-Neundorf and Clark placed 2nd in a time of 3:15.67.
Junior Kevin Kohlhoff won 1-meter diving with a score of 276.10. Sophomore Kazuki Kadota-Browner placed 2nd on both 1-meter and 3-meter with a score of 267.15 and 260.80, respectively.
On the women’s side, the 400-yard medley relay team of Tristinye Martinez-Reyes (Fr.), Cassidy Amber-Torres (Fr.), Areiannah Martinez-Reyes (Jr.), and Morgan Hannon (Fr.) placed third in 4:14.37.
Freshman Ryann Redmond won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:13.73, and was third in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:29.13. Senior Leah Bernhardt won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:25.20, and was second in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:01.15.
Freshman Morgan Hannon won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:18.33, and junior captain Alayna Miller won the 100-yard freestyle in 55.20.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, sophomore Ella Garrow placed 2nd in 1:11.17. Freshman Cassidy Amber-Torres placed third in 1:12.28. The duo replicated their respective 2-3 finish in the 200-yard breaststroke as well.
In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the team of Bernhardt, Julia Bryce (Jr.), Emily Lantry (GS.), and Miller placed second in 3:47.40.
This meet heightened Cortland’s standing against other swimming and diving teams in the SUNYAC Conference. The men are ranked at #1 by almost fifty points ahead of #2 spot, SUNY Oneonta. The women are ranked at #1 by almost sixty points ahead of #2 spot, SUNY Oswego.
The Wet Dragons next meet is a three-day invitational at The College of New Jersey on November 22nd-24th. This is the team’s first time attending this invitational, where several highly-ranked division III teams compete.
