Three of Cortland swimming and Diving’s athletes claim SUNYACS athlete of the weeks spots After last weeks victorious meet against Alfred State
Last Saturday the Cortland Swim team had a tremendously successful victory at their second dual meet and first home meet of the season against Alfred State.
Cortland men’s team defeated Alfred State with a score of 178-101 with the help of 11 individual victories and a win in both relays. Cortland women’s team also came out with an epic win with a score of 177-108 winning 13 events.
Clearly there were many outstanding swims and dives across the board throughout the team contributing to their victory.
Three athletes, Hunter Sugrue-Nuendorf, Kevin Kohlhoff and Alyssa Haberlack specifically shined the most through their performances gaining the team three SUNYAC Athlete of the week titles.
Senior, Hunter Sugure-Nuendorf, earned Men’s SUNYAC Swimmer of the week along with Junior, Kevin Kohlhoff earning his spot as Men’s SUNYAC Diver of the week for the second week in a row now. Kohlhoff claimed the spot last week with Senior, Leah Bernhardt who earned Women’s SUNYAC swimmer of the week beside him.
Sugrue placed 1st in the 100-yard breastroke with a time of 1:02.39 as well as the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.59.
“I thinks it’s a cool recognition to get especially this early in the season, but I couldn’t have done it without my teammates. A lot of them deserve that recognition as well.” Sugrue thoughtfully states, “I’m happy with my times at Alfred but I know there’s always room for improvement.”
Kohlhoff met the NCAA regional standard on the 1-meter for the second time in a row qualifying him for regionals in February. Kohlhoff placed second with a score of 311.03.
“I am happy with my past two meets on 1-meter, but I Know that I have a lot more to do and more dives to learn.” Kohlhoff says, “I am glad that I’m off to a pretty good start and getting SUNYAC diver of the week two weeks in a row is a pretty great feeling as well, ultimately I’m excited for what the rest of the season holds.”
For the women, Sophomore, Alyssa Haberlack earned Women’s Diver of the week.
Haberlack locked in the top core on both 1-meter and 3-meter. Haberlack scored 222.38 on the 1-meter and 220.05 on the 3-meter.
“I am very pleased with my performance at the meet.” Haberlack says, “I believe I’m starting off this season at a better spot that I was in last year, however, there’s definitely more room for improvement, it’s only the second meet after all…As for getting women’s SUNYAC diver of the week, that was a shock for me that I couldn’t be happier about.”
Cortland is finishing up another week of training for their next exciting meet this Saturday, November 9th against Ithaca!
