Suny Cortland has an exceptional and active student life and community. Not only is the pride huge but the athletics and activities are thriving right now. We as a whole have so much strength and happiness to represent being a red dragon. With a wide variety of events and activities, the campus is filled with rich traditions and experiences. The school offers a thriving outside life with many friendships and mesmerizing people.
With over 31 club sports to join, students have a handful to choose from. What sets us apart from other schools is the selection we have. Frisbee, Handball, Rugby, Kickline, and Jiu Jitsu are just the start of it. There is truly a place for everyone here.
If a club is too serious for you, Cortland also offers intramurals, group exercise, and other outdoor pursuits. I have participated in intramural basketball with some of my friends and had a blast. It’s something light and fun for you to do at night to keep you busy. It’s amazing how much Cortland has to offer and how much they care.
Another amazing thing to take advantage of is group exercise classes. I didn’t even know about this until my spring semester here at Cortland but it is truly an amazing experience. There is yoga, cycling, pilates, Zumba, and much more. I also tried a cycling class in the spring of my freshman year and fell in love with it. The facilities are beautiful and brand new. It was so much fun I didn’t even realize I was working out! The instructors are super nice and welcoming. It is a very safe and open environment.
If you are not the sports type that is completely ok because Cortland has 107 academic and volunteer clubs to join! There are multiple clubs for each subject, major, interest, and community. They have clubs that bring together Latino, and African American communities.
I am part of SAAC for student-athletes here at Cortland and the Dragon Chronicle. SAAC is an amazing organization here to bring the student-athlete community together and create something really special. We discuss community service, fun events for athletes, and ways to improve Cortland’s pride on the campus. The Dragon Chronicle is what you are reading right now and it is another great student club. So many things to learn and write about. I get to share my passions and opinions with the Cortland community weekly.
Along with all these fun things to do, there are plenty of pop-up events. Coming up we have Cortland Nites with $3 movie offerings and they give you transportation there and back. There is the Haunted Halloween Homecoming Dance in the Corey Union Function Room. My friends and I have attended Cortland Nites and it is such a great time and super cheap.
Overall I would say Suny Cortland has one of the best student campus life. Not only are the academics thriving but it has so much more to offer than that.
