SUNY Cortland Gymnastics team recently announced their new team captain, Senior, Rianna Adams.
Adams, from South Setauket, graduated from Ward Melville High School and was a member of the varsity gymnastics team and earned all-county and all-state honors during her high school career.
Not only is Adams an all-around athlete she also shines through her academics as well. Adams graduated high school as a member of the National Honors Society and is now a member of the Dean’s List at Cortland.
Throughout her 4 years in Cortland, Adams has had a tremendous athletic career and a significant impact on the team. Adams has earned All-American honors at the NCGA Championships, scored 9.40 on bars and a career-high 9.2 on vaults at the NCGA East Regional.
Rianna ranks up points for her team throughout her seasons by consistently placing high within the top 3 in her events and competing in bars at every event.
To add more to her long list of accomplishments and to start off her last season Adams was officially named team captain, “It’s crazy to think that it’s already my senior year because it’s flown by so fast…Having it be my last year I’m just making sure I live in the moment and appreciate every second.” Adams reflects, “For being captain I’m so honored to be given the title. We voted on who would be captain this year, so it just means a lot to know people look up to me and trust me enough to carry us through the season together.”
Although Adams has set a new achievement as great as becoming team captain, that doesn’t stop her from continuing to set goals for the rest of the season. “A personal goal would be to beat my PR. I had gotten my PR freshmen year.” Adams states, “I had gotten close a couple times last year, but I really want to get above that score and hopefully earn All-American again like I did freshmen year.”
As a new captain, Adams doesn’t just have personal goals to set, she has goals for the team as a whole. “I would love if this team could win regionals this year…I really think this team is so talented and has so much potential that we could finally win regionals which would give us an automatic bid into nationals.” Adams says with hope. “I also think we can totally break our team record…I think if we go into this season being confident and consistent we will have no issue achieving this.”
Overall, the Cortland Gymnastics team has high hopes and big goals this season and with Rianna Adams as their new captain, a bright future ahead of them, “It really is such a privilege to be a part of our team because we are basically just one big family.”
