As summer comes to a close and fall approaches, West Campus Apartment Residents at SUNY Cortland ended summer in perfect spirit by having a BBQ! With students now settled in after completing their first month of the semester, it was the ideal opportunity for a community event where neighbors could connect and become friends.
Students ate their meals picnic-style, spreading out sheets, towels, and large blankets on the grass to create cozy spots for dining and socializing. The evening was truly beautiful; as the sun began to set, it painted the sky with a stunning backdrop of warm oranges and soft pinks. It was the perfect setting for enjoying good food and creating new friendships.
Students gathered in the center lawn of the apartments in the evening, around seven o’clock, to kick off the festivities. West Campus was filled with excitement and laughter as residents came together. RHD Alyssa Estus welcomed everyone with a bright smile, creating an inviting and friendly environment. Her husband took charge of the grill, cooking up a delicious spread of hot dogs and hamburgers for the students to enjoy along with the other various snacks and sodas provided.
In addition to the delicious food, the students living on West Campus were treated to a delightful surprise that evening: the unveiling of a brand-new volleyball net right in the center lawn. This exciting addition to the campus amenities was a welcome treat, sparking joy and enthusiasm among the residents. As the net was assembled, students gathered around, eager to play their first matches on the net.
This new volleyball net promised to be a fantastic focal point for socializing and bonding, transforming the center lawn into a hub of activity. Already home to cornhole boards, the area was becoming a lively gathering spot where everyone could come together to play and connect.
Once dinner ended, many students stayed well into the evening, enjoying the warm atmosphere filled with music, laughter, and new friendships. Conversations flowed freely as groups gathered to share stories and play games. RHD Alyssa Estus, along with several of the RAs, remained on site, embodying the spirit of community that thrives on West Campus. Their presence reinforced the importance of connection and camaraderie, highlighting the close-knit environment that makes this residence feel like home.
It was truly heartwarming to witness how many students transformed from strangers into close friends throughout the evening. For many, the chance to meet and socialize with their neighbors provided a significant boost to their spirits. This gathering served as a perfect icebreaker and offered a welcoming environment for introductions. These relationships will prove to be essential as the semester unfolds, students will come to rely on one another and create lasting memories together.
A happy and unified community not only enhances their college experience but also fosters a supportive atmosphere where everyone can thrive. Students will cherish this night for years to come. It established a great precedent for those living on West Campus, laying the foundation for the memorable experiences that are sure to follow.
