Cortland, NY – The Cortland Police Department put out a statement of a recent social media hoax that has caused concern on campus throughout the community. According to the CPD, a viral post claims that a man pretending to be in distress and homeless has been attacking people in the area. Authorities have confirmed that the information being spread is false.
The social media post, which has been shared on many social media platforms, describes a man posing as homeless to lure in unsuspecting victims before he attacks his victims. This false claim has sparked fear among local residents and students which created a wave of confusion.
The post states that this man is dangerous and used a knife on a 32 year old woman and stole a car from an 88 year old woman under the name of Terry Greys.
“I was nervous to walk to class or into town,” said a SUNY Cortland senior. “Especially after the recent knife stabbing camera guy who was right down the street.”
Police are advising students of SUNY Cortland and residents to listen to verified sources for information and avoid spreading rumors on social media. The police also encourage the public to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement rather than rely on the viral post for safety updates.
The Cortland Police Department is now investigating the origin of the social media hoax and reminding the public about the legal consequences of spreading hoaxes that cause public chaos.
If anyone has questions or concerns, they are encouraged to contact the City of Cortland Police Department directly at (607) 753-3001.
The CPD is committed to keeping the community informed with accurate and up-to-date information, asking all residents and students to stay alert but not alarmed by hoaxes and rumors.
