Campus Recreation has outdone themselves once again! This past Wednesday, dubbed “Wellness Wednesday,” the team created an exciting obstacle course right outside the Student Life Center. With beautiful weather and great music the event was destined to be a hit.
Set up on the front lawn of the Student Life Center students were drawn to the energy and fun as they passed by. The course was set up to have two students compete simultaneously, providing a friendly sense of competition.
The obstacle course featured the following; a 200-meter row on the ergometers, a crawl under a series of cones with ropes hovering just above the ground, hurdle jumps, a kettlebell carry, jump rope, box jumps, tire flips, and a sprint back to the starting line.
When signing up, competitors had the option to register as “competitive” or “just for fun.” This approach encouraged a diverse group of students to participate, reducing pressure for those who wanted to try it out while still allowing those aiming for top prizes and the best times to compete seriously.
Everyone who signed up was entered into a raffle for foam rollers, while those who chose to compete had the chance to win a massage gun. These prizes were perfectly on theme as the event was centered around wellness and promoting physicality.
The prizes were set up on a big table for people to see. Along with the prizes campus recreation generously supplied granola bars and water bottles for those who completed the obstacle course. With warmer temperatures and the intensity of the course, this became a great asset. Students were definitely thankful once they crossed the finish line.
While many students chose to compete, plenty of others came out to support their friends and watch the event. Jenna Davidson attended to cheer on her friend Riya, who was competing in the course for her health economics class. As she watched from the sidelines, Jenna shared her thoughts about the day, saying, “It is a beautiful day with really positive vibes in the atmosphere; everyone is so welcoming and supportive!” This sentiment was felt by everyone at the obstacle course.
Those who competed were inspired afterward. The course ignited a spark in many of the students to get back in touch with their physical fitness. Huijie Xiao who competed explained, “The obstacle course was challenging, it is a good reminder and motivator for people to get into the gym!”
This is exactly the type of message that campus recreation aimed to convey through this event, emphasizing the importance of community and support among students. At SUNY Cortland, “Wellness Wednesday” embodies the school’s spirit to promote health, happiness, and positivity. SUNY Cortland seeks to create an environment where students can thrive physically and mentally while building meaningful connections with one another.
The obstacle course was just one of the many exciting events campus recreation has organized for this year. It would be beneficial for everyone to make it a goal to attend at least one of the Wellness Wednesday events throughout the semester. These gatherings are a fantastic opportunity to connect with fellow Red Dragons and foster community spirit!
