The Cortland Jiu-Jitsu team represented its gym with skill, grit, and a strong sense of unity at the Grappling Industries competition in Syracuse this past weekend putting on an impressive display. The team earned important experience and strengthened its reputation in the local Jiu Jitsu community by winning multiple medals while competing against various jiu-jitsu gyms and martial arts schools.
One of the most impressive displays came from Blue Belt Nolan Ferguson, who won two silver medals in the 170 lbs Gi competition and the 155 lbs No-Gi division. Ferguson’s dual victories highlight his adaptability and technical skill on the mat as he faced tough opponents in both the no-gi and gi divisions his success is a perfect example of the effort and dedication that Cortland Jiu Jitsu athletes put into their training.
Apart from Ferguson’s outstanding performance, Madison Sheilding won a bronze in the Blue Belt 135 lbs division Sheilding was a high-level competitor who showed her development and ability in the sport by fighting through tough opponents with her skill and determination her medal is a wonderful accomplishment for the gym and her.
A White Belt who was participating in the 145 lbs class Nicola Petruccelli, won a bronze in his class as well. As one of the team’s more recent competitors Petruccelli’s success in Syracuse shows how Cortland Jiu Jitsu is creating a strong foundation, his success at this stage in his Jiu Jitsu career shows how the outstanding instruction and encouraging atmosphere the Cortland club team provides for its members.
All of the Cortland Jiu Jitsu team members learned a great deal from the competition in addition to winning medals they made new friends with athletes from other schools and improved their skills. The team had to quickly adjust its tactics and strategies due to the wide variety of competitors they faced all of which had different backgrounds in martial arts. The Cortland athletes were able to critically assess their training and find areas for improvement as they got ready for their next competition.
